Zaozernoye

Settlement "Chaika" in Zaozernoye - these are the ruins of a Greek-Scythian settlement founded around the middle of the IV century BC.E. Chersonesos. In the middle of the II century. The city was captured by the Scythians and existed until the middle of the first century AD, after which it was abandoned. The settlement was discovered only in 1959, and since then archaeological excavations have been periodically conducted on its site. Many of the artifacts found here are on display at Local History Museum of Yevpatoria.

The place got its name because of the nearby sanatorium "Chaika", for the construction of which sand was mined from the site of the settlement in the last century, then the ruins were discovered. What it was actually called, it was not possible to establish, since no mention in the documents and on the maps of the settlement has not yet been found.

Today, the settlement is a complex of ruins that can be freely visited at any time. Most tourists perceive it simply as a pile of geometrically arranged stones, and indeed, for the most part there is nothing to see here: there are no buildings and artifacts here, there are only outlines of buildings made of stones among bushes and trees. There is also no route for inspection, signs and an information board about the history of this place. Nevertheless, historically it is a significant place worthy of visiting by lovers of Antiquities. Unfortunately, the ruins are not protected in any way in the period between excavations, and are gradually destroyed by tourists and locals.
