General information and recreation in Olenevka

Olenevka is a village in the Chernomorskoe region on the western coast of Crimea, 100 kilometers from Yevpatoria and 170 from Simferopol and the airport (Olenevka on the map of Crimea). Despite the fact that officially Olenevka is just a village, in fact it is one of the most popular resort villages of the Crimea, not for nothing that became famous. After all, there is one of the best sandy beaches in the whole Crimea, a well-developed tourist infrastructure, and near the unique natural attractions of the Tarkhankut Peninsula. Olenevka is also known as one of the best places on the peninsula, where you can go diving and master such active recreation and sports as windsurfing and kitesurfing.

Sandy beach in Olenevka
Relaxing on the beach in Olenevka

But to be objective, we will, as always, note both the positive and negative aspects of the resort:

Advantages of the resort

  • Wide and long sandy beach with fine yellow sand.
  • There are many options for active pastime: diving, kitesurfing, winsurfing, entertainment on the beaches.
  • Not many vacationers and plenty of space on the beach.
  • Shallow depth and smooth sandy bottom, perfect for relaxing with children.
  • Here is one of the most beautiful natural attractions of the Crimea – the Tarkhankut Peninsula.
  • Tour operators offer the cheapest package tours on the entire peninsula.

Disadvantages of the resort

  • It is difficult to reach by public transport from the airport or the nearest railway station.
  • There aren't a lot of attractions and entertainment available on their own.
  • Due to the high popularity in recent years, prices for accommodation and services have increased significantly.
  • A very meager selection of inexpensive group excursions to distant popular attractions of the Crimea.
  • An unpleasant smell from the lake and seaweed almost throughout the resort.
  • Windy weather and a later start to the beach season than on the YBK.
  • There are few comfortable accommodation options that match their price.

Olenevka Beach

As we have already mentioned, Olenevka is one of the best sandy beaches of the Crimea. Some tourists consider it unequivocally the best, and every year they return here only because of it, despite some of the shortcomings and inconveniences of the resort. The length of the bathing coastline in Karadzhinskaya Bay is more than two kilometers, and all this is a wide strip of fine yellow sand, reaching 100 meters in width in places.

In different areas, Olenevka Beach is equipped in different ways: there are sparsely populated places without infrastructure, and there is the main beach of Miami Beach with services and entertainment. So you can choose a suitable place for your mood and desire, you just have to take a little walk along the shore.

On Miami Beach you will find all the typical beach amenities: rental of sun loungers and umbrellas, gazebos for relaxation of increased comfort, traditional beach entertainment, restaurant and bar, sale of fast food. Food and drinks here are quite expensive, so if you want to save money, you can bring everything with you, for which it does not hurt to take a cooler bag for cool drinks and ice cream. But beach services and entertainment here are inexpensive, and you can use a free shower to flush the sand and changing booths. Here are the prices of services and entertainment on Olenevka beach for reference:

  • Access to the beaches is free.
  • Showers and changing rooms are free.
  • Toilet-20 rubles.
  • Chaise longue-150 rubles / day, 100 rubles/half day.
  • Gazebo of increased comfort-400 rubles/half day.
  • Banana riding - from 300 rubles/person.
  • Riding on a tablet - from 350 rubles/person.

Resort infrastructure

The urban infrastructure, i.e. shops, markets, government agencies and public transport, in Olenevka are very poorly developed, as in any Crimean village. But the tourist infrastructure here is surprisingly good, and it is improving every year. There are many hotels and guest houses, there is entertainment, excursions are sold, transport and tourist transfers to the airport and to the railway station are offered for rent. True, so far most of the tourist infrastructure is "wild", that is, it is offered and sold by private individuals without any official documents and on oral agreements, so be prepared for this feature of the resort.

Shopping in Olenevka is very poorly developed, there is not even a single modern supermarket. Purchases can be made in small rural stores with inflated prices and a meager assortment. The largest selection of products and manufactured goods can be found in several neighboring shops and at the market in the center of the village on Lenin Street near the bus station. Therefore, if you need to buy immediately a large number of products for recreation at more or less reasonable prices, it is better to go right here. Here, by the way, there are two only ATMs of the village. And cash on vacation you will need here, because you can not pay with a card almost anywhere. For withdrawing cash from cards of Russian banks, including SBER, you will have to pay a commission of at least 1%.

On the main street of Lenin there are a couple of canteens with low prices, but we advise you to eat there with extreme caution. Unfortunately, the quality of service, food and sanitary conditions there are far from good. Apparently, the remoteness of Olenevka from large administrative centers, and, accordingly, controlling bodies, affects. Therefore, the advice-before ordering and eating a particular dish, try to assess its freshness at least in appearance and smell. However, this applies to all other catering establishments in Olenevka. Fortunately, most accommodation options offer an individual or shared kitchen.

Hotels and accommodation in Olenevka, where to stay

The popularity of Olenevka among tourists is growing every year, and therefore new hotels, guest houses and recreation centers are opening here. However, most of the accommodation is still simple options with a minimum of services and comfort, but for relatively little money. So simple accommodation in the private sector or mini-hotel will cost from 500 rubles/person per day with early booking. There are several hotels equated to three and two stars in Olenevka, but they will have to pay from 2000 rubles per person per day, which is generally expensive even by the standards of the Crimea.

It is believed that you can save on vacation if you stay at a local campsite near the beach, but this is only in theory. In fact, the prices there are almost higher than renting a room in the private sector in the center of the village. For example, in 2021, when camping in your tent, you had to pay 250 rubles per person per day and 100 rubles per car. At the same time, it was necessary to pay extra for basic services: shower – 100 rubles/day, electricity – 200 rubles/day, laundry – 100 rubles. And, for example, accommodation in a house from a van cost from 1700 rubles for two. The only and indisputable plus of auto camping is the proximity to the beach. So we advise you to think three times before deciding on such "savings".

Now let's take a closer look at the question of where it is better to choose a hotel or accommodation in Olenevka, since there are its own characteristics. The fact is that the residential part of the village, where most of the inexpensive guest houses and rental housing options are located, is located away from the beach at distances of 500 meters and more than three kilometers. Take a look at the map of the village and you will see for yourself. And this means that if you basically do not want to walk far to the beach and you do not have your own transport, it makes sense to choose accommodation as close to the shore as possible, and there are very few such options here. This is, first of all, the auto-camping mentioned above, which occupies a fairly large area along the beach, and in fact it is the first line. Then there is the southern part of the village, from where you can walk to the beach in 5-10 minutes, and the village center with shops and a bus station will also be accessible on foot. Well, another good area for accommodation is the north of Olenevka behind the estuary Lake (on top of the map, if anything). But the bad thing about this area is that it's a pretty remote place and is three kilometers from the center.

But reliable and proven sites where you can book hotels, guest houses, recreation centers and private housing in Olenevka:

When searching for hotels in Crimea on Booking.com you will most likely get a message - "no options found". This is a limitation booking.com because of the sanctions against the inhabitants of the peninsula. But to get around it and book accommodation in the Crimea is very simple: you just need to turn on the "traveling for work" tick. Weather and seasons in Olenevka, when it is better to go

Olenevka is a beach resort, and therefore the best time to relax here is summer. The best months for a beach holiday are July and August, and this is the peak tourist season, when most vacationers arrive at the resort, and prices rise. But this is not the only time when tourists go to Olenevka, so we will tell you about all the periods:

  • May-June. This is the beginning of the tourist season, but at the same time a rather controversial time for rest, since its success will depend too much on the vagaries of the weather, and this is a matter of luck. In May, the village is just beginning to wake up from "hibernation", cafes, guest houses and other tourist infrastructure begin to open. If you are lucky with the weather, you can sunbathe and walk around the neighborhood, but comfortable swimming is out of the question, because the water is still too cold. It gets warmer in June, but in recent years the weather in the first half of the month is unpredictable. For example, in early June 2021, the temperature barely rose above 15 degrees, and as a result, the entire beach holiday was held in warm jackets. So going to Olenevka in May and June you need to either count on luck, or closely follow the weather forecast.

  • July-August. This is the high season and the best time to relax in Olenevka. If you want the weather to be as comfortable as possible, the entire infrastructure to work and the atmosphere to be as fun as possible, then go to these months. Just keep in mind that the costs of accommodation and services are high, the beaches are crowded.

  • September-October. It's the velvet season. Most vacationers, especially families with children, go home, the resort is empty, respectively, prices for hotels and tourist services are reduced. In the velvet season, it is not as warm as in summer, and you should take warm clothes with you in case of temporary cold weather and for evening walks. However, this is quite a good time for swimming and sunbathing. In some years, the heat lingers so long that you can swim comfortably until the end of October, but this is rather an exception.

  • November-April. This time is called the offseason, in fact it is already the offseason. Rarely any tourists go at this time on vacation in Olenevka, and many guest houses and hotels are closed, the tourist infrastructure is curtailed. However, the most seasoned can swim up until December, and sometimes sunny and warm weather is established, allowing you to sunbathe in any month of the year. What is good, in the off-season you can get excellent prices for tours to Olenevka at a price cheaper than air travel.
