The ancient city of Tiritaka

The ancient city of Tiritaka, as well as the ruins of Nymphs and Pantikapei in Kerch, belongs to the monuments of cultural heritage and represents the ruins of an ancient city founded by the Greeks in the VI century BC.

The first residents were housed in dugouts, and with the expansion and development of the settlement, above-ground residential and outbuildings are already being built. Fortress walls are erected to protect against attacks from outside. Studies confirm that in the III century BC the locals were actively engaged in fishing and winemaking, which is confirmed by the presence of fish-and-salt baths and wineries found on the settlement. In the 1st century AD, the city was completely rebuilt, probably due to a number of reasons – fires, raids and an earthquake. In the third century it decays, but the population continues to live here. In the V-VI centuries, a Christian basilica was erected. Despite the attack of the Turkkats in the VI century, the city continued to exist until the VIII century.

Tiritaka continues to be explored and from time to time you can find employees conducting archaeological work. However, the place is not popular with tourists, so we will not advise mandatory visits. It would not be superfluous if there were information signs at the excavation sites, but there are none, so it will not be easy to understand what kind of object is in front of you.
