What to Expect and Is It Worth Visiting
The fortress of Yeni-Kale or Yenikale is an Ottoman fortress built at the beginning of the XVIII century. Its name translates from Turkish as "New Fortress". The fortress was built by the Italian architect Holoppo, who converted to Islam, so the structure has such an unusual appearance. It occupied an area of about 2.5 hectares, and contained residential buildings, a mosque, a powder magazine, an armory, and a water storage. To provide the fortress with water, an underground water supply system was built.
For the Turks, the fortress should have been very important, namely, to prevent the passage of Russian ships from the Azov to the Black Sea. But it served this purpose for less than sixty years and was taken by Russian troops from land without a fight in 1771 during the Russian-Turkish war.
Today the fortress is a historical monument. Unfortunately, only ruins remain from the main part of the fortress, and what remains continues to collapse. The lack of control over access to the attraction only worsens the situation. But the southern Bastion is especially well preserved, and this is one of the most recognizable places in the fortress and in Kerch in general. The gate is also well preserved.
It is convenient to combine a visit to Yenikale with a trip to the ostrich farm, the lighthouse and the lighthouse beach.

🚶 How to get there
The Yeni-Kale Fortress is located 11 kilometers from the center of Kerch (fortress on the map). You can get to it from the city by bus number 24 (goes directly from the fortress, see the route on the map), No. 1 and No. 18 (to the stop "Stroigorodok", and then 20 minutes on foot). The fare costs 35 rubles. All buses depart from the Kerch bus station and go along Gorky Street. If you will get here by car, please note that navigators in the Kerch area work very poorly due to security measures due to their own.
