What to Expect and Is It Worth Visiting
Mount Mithridates is located in the center of Kerch, its height is 91.4 meters. This is the geographical and cultural center of the city, and perhaps the most visited by tourists and the central attraction. From the top of the mountain offers a wonderful view of the surroundings, besides there are several historical monuments.
It is believed that the ancient city of Pantikapei was located on the mountain (its ruins can be seen on the mountainside), and it is named after the Pontic king Mithridates VI Eupator. Archaeological excavations have been carried out here since the XIX century, and amazing finds and discoveries are still being made. Archaeologists believe that numerous passages under the mountain hide more than 3,500 ancient crypts, of which only a few hundred have been studied by scientists.
Another important event is connected with this place. In 1943, after a stubborn siege, Soviet troops broke through the defenses of the Nazis and were able to raise the red banner on the top of the mountain, and a few days later Kerch was completely liberated from the invaders. The Obelisk of Glory, installed at the top in 1944, and the eternal flame are dedicated to this.
The Mithridatic staircase leads to the mountain, which any tourist can overcome, but it will take a little endurance to overcome 436 steps. But the figure of 436 steps is inaccurate, someone counts 425, we personally did not count. You can also go upstairs by car on a new asphalt road.
