What to Expect and Is It Worth Visiting
Church of the Holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Nina is the main Orthodox church in Gaspra and at the same time an architectural monument. It belongs to the Charax palace complex, despite the fact that it seems to be located away from it outside the park. A modest small building built in the style of Armenian churches and dedicated to St. Nina, the Enlightener of Georgia. In addition, the very idea of its construction echoes the name of Princess Nina, the daughter of Prince George Romanov, the owner of Charax. Previously, the entrance to the temple was made by a mosaic of the image of the Savior Not Made with Hands, there were mosaic panels on the walls, and a dome crowned the roof, unfortunately, all this has not survived to this day.
The church was built in 1908, at the same time as the Charax estate, but some elements and decoration were finally completed by 1912. Since the 20s of the XX century, after the arrival of Soviet power, the temple building, like the Charax complex itself, was used as an administrative building of the sanatorium. Only since 2011, the temple has been used again as a religious institution.
To conduct divine services, a temple of the Icon of the Mother of God "Indestructible Wall" was built next to the Church of St. Nina, which was originally used as a temporary temple building for parishioners. Today it is a functioning temple, services are held here.
