Fountain To the Good Genius, Feodosia
Fountain "To the Good Genius"

Today's fountain was opened in 2004 and is dedicated to the artist Aivazovsky. It is installed on the place where in the last century the inhabitants of Feodosia erected a monument-fountain as a sign of gratitude to the artist's family. But the first monument did not last long. At first it was closed due to the fact that it was poorly designed and flooded everything around, and during the Great Patriotic War it disappeared without a trace, and its place was taken by a monument to the pioneer-partisan Vita Korobkov (now located in a nearby park). Around the fountain there is a beautiful Jubilee Park with roses, walking paths and places to relax in the shade, and opposite there is a children's playground.

Aivazovsky in Feodosia

In the autumn of 1845, after completing the voyage with Admiral Litke, Aivazovsky appealed to the Main Naval Headquarters and the Academy of Arts with a request to extend his stay in the Crimea to complete the work begun; and received permission to stay until the following May. But in the same year Aivazovsky begins construction of his house on the city embankment and settles in Feodosia. Aivazovsky traveled a lot, often, sometimes several times a year, went to St. Petersburg, but he considered Feodosia his home. "My address is always in Feodosia" he said in a letter to Pavel Mikhailovich Tretyakov.

In addition to the house in Feodosia, the artist subsequently acquired an estate in the nearby village of Sheikh Mamai, had a small house in Sudak, where he sometimes played the violin accompanied by the piano composer A. A. Spendiarov, who had a summer cottage in Sudak.

Aivazovsky was actively engaged in the affairs of Feodosia, its improvement, contributed to the prosperity of the city. His influence on Feodosian life was enormous. The artist opened an art school and an art gallery in Feodosia, turning Feodosia into one of the centers of pictorial culture in the south of Russia and preparing the formation of a kind of school of painters of the Crimean nature (Cimmerian School of Painting), initiated the construction of a city concert hall, took care of the establishment of a library in Feodosia.

In the spring of 1846, 6 warships led by the flagship of the Black Sea Fleet "Twelve Apostles" under the command of the later famous naval commander V. A. Kornilov (at that time captain of the 1st rank) arrived in Feodosia to congratulate Aivazovsky when he celebrated his return to his hometown and the first decade of his work. Admiral M. P. Lazarev and A. I. Kaznacheyev, who supported the artist in his youth, also attended the celebration.

Later, in the early 1890s, Aivazovsky, according to his project and at his own expense, erected a fountain in memory of the mayor of Feodosia A. I. Kaznacheyev (in the 1940s the fountain was lost).
