What to Expect and Is It Worth Visiting

Stone mushrooms, Crimea
Stone mushroom

Stone mushrooms near Alushta are an unusual natural formation in the form of a mushroom. The "cap" of the mushroom consists of hard stone rocks, while the leg is soft and easily weathered, due to which it becomes thinner over the centuries, and the cap remains large. In the valley of the Sotera River (aka the Alaka and Jurla river) there are several such mushrooms at once, unfortunately some of them have already collapsed either under the influence of nature, or at the hands of man. The largest mushrooms here have a height of 3 and 5 meters. While visiting this place, do not disturb the bases of the mushrooms, so as not to destroy them.

About a 20-minute walk along the river from the mushrooms is an interesting waterfall "Geyser". It is small, but unusual in that water from a height falls into a natural funnel in the rock, and a fountain shoots up from it, like a geyser.

Attention! The road to the mushrooms is not so simple, you will have to climb very steeply up a slope strewn with small stones, and it is especially difficult and dangerous to do this during the rain. It will be very difficult to overcome the trail with children and elderly people. The mushrooms themselves are also on a very steep and dangerous slope.

🕐 Working hours

🚶 How to get there

stone mushrooms and the Geyser fountain are located outside Alushty in the Sotera River valley (stone mushrooms on the map, waterfall "Geyser" on the map). You can get here by buses departing from the Alushta bus station towards Walleye, Rybachie, Privetnoe. These buses depart approximately every hour during the daytime. You need to go to the intersection with the Sotera River (also called Alaka Creek). Tell the driver to drop you off at the turn to the holiday village near the river, they know where it is. Then you will have to walk along a dirt road about one and a half kilometers towards the mountains (from the sea) to the sign for the tourist trail "Alaka Stone Mushrooms Creek". Here you will have to turn off the road and follow the Alaka creek along a narrow path of about 800 meters, and then leave the stream to the right and climb steeply uphill for about 200 meters. Then you will get to the mushrooms. There will be no more pointers except the first one, so ideally it is better to stock up on a navigator. To get to the waterfall, you will have to walk about the same amount along the river. If you come here by your own transport, you will have to leave the car next to the sign for the tourist trail.
