What to Expect and Is It Worth Visiting
Zakabannaya mosque stands out because it was built in Soviet times in 1924-26 in honor of the 1000th anniversary of the adoption of Islam, and Stalin personally gave permission for its construction. Yes, you may be surprised, but Islam on the territory of Russia was adopted even earlier than Christianity, although these territories were not yet Russian, but belonged to Volga Bulgaria. By the way, this is the only mosque built on the territory behind Lake Kaban, which after the capture of Kazan was traditionally inhabited by Orthodox. The fact is that after those events, all the indigenous people were resettled in the Old Tatar settlement on the other side of Lake Kaban, so the mosque was called "Zakabannaya".
The mosque did not operate for long, and already in 1930 it was closed. After that, there was a kindergarten, a school, a DOSAAF club. Again as a mosque, it was opened only in 1991. It is located somewhat away from other attractions, so tourists rarely get to it. In general, we would not say that this is one of the mandatory tourist places in the city, but if you walk along the new embankment around the lake or get acquainted with the sights and temples on the pedestrian St. Petersburg street, you can look here.

🚶 How to get there
26 Hadi Taktash STR. (mosque on the map). You can get by Metro to the station "Gabdulla Tukaya Square" and then 10 minutes on foot. Very close is also lake Kaban with its new modern promenade, and relatively close to the temples on St. Petersburg street, so we advise you to combine these attractions.
