Is It Worth Going to Arkhyz with Children?

This is the main question that arises for parents planning a vacation. Let's be upfront: Arkhyz is not a resort with kids' clubs and animators. There are no water parks or trampoline centers within walking distance. The nature here is rugged, and most interesting places are high in the mountains, which require walking or driving by jeep.

However, this doesn't mean you shouldn't go here with children. You just need to honestly assess your own strengths and your child's interests.

  • What Age of Children to Travel With

With children of early school age (under 7-8 years old) and preschoolers, there's not much to do in Arkhyz. They'll quickly get bored sitting in a jeep, and they simply don't have the stamina for long hikes. Routes that are manageable for an adult will become a trial for a small child. If you do go with little ones, be prepared that most of your time will be spent at Taulu Glade or in the village, and you'll have to take turns doing the challenging routes, leaving the child with one of the adults or at the guest house (after instructing them and asking the staff to keep an eye on them, of course).

With older children (from 8-10 years old), it's more interesting. They can cover several kilometers, and they're interested in new experiences: jeeps, ATVs, horses. We've even taken children of this age on the most challenging routes (Barytovy Waterfall with a 700-meter climb, Sofia Lakes with a 900-meter climb). But our kids are motivated and enthusiastic.

So, it's really not worth dragging children into the mountains on long routes if they're not interested. If a child is going reluctantly, they'll become a burden, you'll be distracted by their whims, causing problems and ruining the experience for the whole group. Moreover, on most routes, this distraction and heightened emotion can also be unsafe. It's better to leave them at the hotel with a tablet if they want that, rather than torturing them and yourself.

  • What to Do with Children in Arkhyz

The surest bet is active but not overly strenuous activities. The ideal place for children is Taulu Glade. There's everything: horseback riding, ATVs, jeeps, cafes, campsites, and, importantly, great views. Children also usually really enjoy jeep and ATV rides — it's exciting and easy. Another option is easy hiking routes, like the hike to Kazachiy Waterfall, or a trip to Bottomless Lake.

Again, the main thing is not to overestimate the child's strength. Even if you yourself go to Sofia Lakes, consider whether the child needs it. Strictly speaking, people do go on even the most challenging tourist routes with children here, but realistically assess the risks. It's better to leave the child in comfortable conditions than to drag them along a steep trail for 6 hours.

Skiing with children in Arkhyz is also possible: there are children's instructors and schools. But if you're planning skiing with lessons, it's better to take care of equipment and clothing for the children yourself or check with the school in advance if they have the right sizes.

From the center to the waterfall, you'll need to cover 2.5 kilometers with only 180 meters of elevation gain, with most of the path being gentle and shaded by the forest. There are no ski lifts in the village of Arkhyz itself; they are all located in the Romantik settlement and on Lunaya Polyana, 10 kilometers away. Riding a cable car is probably the safest and most exciting activity for a child. The cable cars lead to the peaks and slopes of the surrounding mountains, offering stunning views of mountain peaks, some covered with glaciers. If you wish, you can walk along the trails or ski runs, reach mountain streams, or even walk back down to the village.

Practical Information

🕐 Opening Hours: The excursion (sightseeing) cable cars operate in summer from 09:00 to 16:30, but hours may change, so check locally. In winter, the schedule is different, usually from 08:00 to 15:30.

Bottomless Lake — an accessible high-mountain lake for the whole family

Bottomless Lake (karst sinkhole) is located at an altitude of 2320 meters — the most accessible mountain lake in the Arkhyz area. Most of the road from Romantik settlement is paved; then 4 km are a dirt road with steep climbs where it's better not to risk taking a regular car. You can leave your car at the parking area where the pavement ends and walk, taking 1.5–2 hours one way. The most comfortable option for a family is to take a jeep or ATV tour. Children usually love such trips. Entry is free, the water is not very cold — you can swim. This is an ideal option for a first independent introduction to the mountains: it requires no special preparation, and the views are stunning. More about Bottomless Lake and how to visit it.

Practical Information

🕐 Opening Hours: 24/7, better to go in the morning.

💵 Entry Fee / Ticket Price: free.

🚶 How to Get There: The lake is located 21 km from Arkhyz (on the map). Jeeping and ATVs

Jeeping — an exciting adventure for children

Jeep and ATV rides are probably the most exciting thing for children. This is an active, almost extreme type of activity, but if done wisely, it will become a vivid memory. You can ask the jeep driver to drive more carefully — local drivers are generally very friendly and responsive, despite their rugged appearance. However, if you're in a large group, other tourists might not appreciate this request. So be prepared to take a tour for your small group or family. You can find jeeping offers at Taulu Glade or in travel agencies on Lenin Street. The cost of a tour is usually quoted per vehicle (for 6-10 people), so for a family, it's most cost-effective to find travel companions or take a tour as part of a group excursion.

Practical Information

💵 Price: from 1000 rubles per person in a group, from 6000 rubles per jeep (up to 6 people).

Horseback Riding

In Arkhyz, there are several places where you can go horseback riding, including covering some of the tourist routes in the Teberda Nature Reserve and other trails on horseback. The most accessible option is just beyond the bridge over the river on Khubieva Street, on the way to Kazachiy Waterfall. Here you can rent a horse and take a ride under the guidance of an instructor. For young children, this is an excellent alternative to a long walk. Riding is offered for both groups and individuals, with the price varying little.

Practical Information

🕐 Opening Hours: There is no set schedule for horseback riding tours; they start at any time convenient for you by arrangement.

💵 Entry Fee / Ticket Price: Cost of riding from 500 rubles/hour.

Rafting

One of the most extreme activities in Arkhyz is rafting – descending the Bolshoy Zelenchuk River on inflatable rafts. If your child is older and enjoys active recreation, you can try rafting. The river is quite calm, without serious rapids, so even children are allowed. The cost of rafting in Arkhyz is lower than on other popular Russian resorts, so if you haven't tried this type of activity, now is the time to try it here. All necessary equipment is provided for rafting, along with an instructor for the group.

Practical Information

🕐 Opening Hours: There is no set schedule; departures occur several times a day when a group is gathered.

💵 Entry Fee / Ticket Price: from 1200 rubles/person for an 8-kilometer rafting trip, 1500 rubles for 10 kilometers.

It was founded in the USSR in 1966, for which the largest optical telescope in the world at the time (with a 6-meter mirror diameter, now the second largest) and a radio telescope with a 600-meter antenna were built. Today, any tourist can visit the observatory on a guided tour. There is also a special night tour with stargazing through a CELESTRON telescope with a 280mm objective lens and 660x magnification. This is not only interesting but also educational for school-age children. More about the Zelenchukskaya Observatory.

Alanian Settlement in Arkhyz — an open-air museum

It is believed that many historical monuments can be seen in the vicinity of Arkhyz — ruins from the period of the ancient Alanian kingdom. But the only developed place where you can get acquainted with the heritage of that era is the open-air museum, the Nizhne-Arkhyz Historical-Architectural Archaeological Complex, or simply the Alanian Settlement. For school-age children, this will be an educational excursion — you can see ancient temples, a statue of a Turkic warrior, and a stone circle that supposedly served as a solar calendar. It covers a large area, so it's better to move around by car or at least by bicycle. More about the Alanian Settlement in Arkhyz.

🚶 How to Get There: The archaeological park is located in the village of Nizhny Arkhyz, 25 kilometers from Arkhyz (Alanian Settlement on the map). It's best to get here by your own transport, taxi, or on a tour. To enter the area, you first need to pass through the barrier to the village. To do this, at the checkpoint you must present documents to be recorded in the log. A few dozen meters after the barrier, you'll find the entrance to the archaeological complex itself, where you need to purchase a ticket, and then drive further within the territory. You can also take any bus from Arkhyz.

What to Bring to Arkhyz with Children: Complete Checklist

When going to the mountains with a child, you need to be prepared for anything. Here's a list of things that will definitely come in handy during the trip and on hikes.

The main rule: there are no familiar shops or pharmacies in the mountains. You need to take everything you need from home or buy it in large cities (Cherkessk, Nevinnomyssk) on the way.

  • First-Aid Kit for a Child on a Hike

    • Band-aids of different sizes (for blisters — essential!) and an elastic bandage.
    • Antiseptic (hydrogen peroxide, chlorhexidine, alcohol wipes).
    • Motion sickness medicine (if the child is sensitive to serpentine roads).
    • Antihistamines (in case of allergies to plants or insect bites).
    • Fever reducer (paracetamol or ibuprofen in syrup/suppositories).
    • Stomach remedies (sorbents, enzymes).
    • Mosquito repellent and tick repellent (for treating clothes).
    • Sunburn cream (SPF 50+) and after-sun cream (with panthenol).
  • Entertainment for the Road and Leisure

The truth is that children will probably spend most of their time on tablets and phones. This is the reality of modern vacations. So don't forget:

    • Chargers, cables, and a power bank (essential!) — so gadgets don't run out at the worst moment.
    • Download cartoons, games, or books onto the tablet in advance — there may be no internet in the mountains.
    • If your child prefers active games, you can bring a board game for the evening at the lodge, a ball, or a badminton set for walks on Taulu Glade.
  • Food Considerations

Keep in mind that the main menu in Arkhyz cafes consists of shashlik, khychyns, and other Caucasian cuisine. A child might not want to eat this every day. So:

    • Bring a supply of snacks your child is used to: cookies, juice, fruit (apples, bananas), baby food (if traveling with a toddler).
    • Bring plenty of water for hikes (at least 1.5 liters per person).
    • There are small grocery stores in the village where you can buy dairy products, cereals, pasta if you plan to cook yourself.

Important: for hikes in the mountains, be sure to put trekking shoes with a stiff sole on your child, shoes they have already broken in. Sneakers and trainers are not suitable — the foot will slip, and rocks can hurt their toes. And don't forget a hat and sunglasses — the sun is very active in the mountains.

Just a reminder that the best way to explore Arkhyz is through guided tours. Even better if they're conducted by locals who know and love their region. You can find and book group or private tours from locals with reviews on these trusted sites:
