Description and is it worth a visit
Ruins of the temple of Candi Mendut (Chandi Mendut, Candi Mendut or Mendut Temple) are located 3.5 kilometers from the entrance to Borobudur, and are usually visited together with it. It was built, presumably, in the IX century, and this is the oldest of the trinity of temples Candi Mendut, Borobudur and Candi Pawon located on the same line. The reason why they are so located is unknown.
The temple consists of one stupa with a square base, hollow inside. Unfortunately, at the time of our visit in 2019, tourists were not allowed to enter, it was possible to inspect it only from the outside. Meanwhile, inside it is one of the most unusual Buddha statues in Java. Her unusual feature is that she "sits" not in the traditional lotus position, but like a European man with her legs spread out. On the territory around there are several other small ruins, over which restoration work is underway. In general, you will spend no more than 10 minutes exploring Candi Mendut without a guide.
