How to get to Sihanoukville

Getting to Sihanoukville is the main and only problem of this resort. He, of course, is not in the distant dense jungle. But considering that planes do not fly directly to Cambodia from Russia, and in Sihanoukville itself the airport accepts flights only from Siem Reap Airport, it is unlikely to get here without using ground transport it will succeed. The most convenient route, in our opinion, is to fly with a transfer to Phnom Penh, and from there by taxi or via Phnom Penh by bus. There are also options to get here by bus from Ho Chi Minh City, Siem Reap and other Asian cities, but it is unlikely to be possible to plan such a route without an intermediate overnight stay.

🚌 By bus

Bus routes connect Sihanoukville with Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam). Sihanoukville has a central bus station located next to the central market (bus station on the map). It may not look like a station, but a large bus parking lot, but all buses depart and arrive here. Tickets for any buses are easily purchased at travel agencies on the street, company offices and at the hotel reception, but with a small additional commission. Without commission, you can purchase directly at the station.

Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville many buses depart daily (approximately every hour). The fare is from 3.5 to 6.5 dollars, travel time is about 4 hours. Buses depart from Phnom Penh in different places of the city (each company has its own place of departure), but this is not a problem, since, as a rule, the ticket price includes a transfer from the hotel to the place of departure of the bus. The first bus from Phnom Penh departs at 7:00, the last at 14:30.

It is better to buy tickets for it in advance at Pattaya North bus station (cost from 200 baht), and do not forget to ask at what time and from where the bus departs (or rather makes a stop to pick up passengers). From Trat, you will have to take another local bus to Had Lek for 120 baht (money of Thailand, exchange rate).

You can immediately get to Had Lek or to Trat by tourist minibus (tickets are purchased at travel agencies of the city from 500 baht).

After crossing the border, you will have to take another bus or taxi to get to Sihanoukville from Koh Kong. For a trip from Koh Kong to Sihanoukville by taxi, they will ask for $ 80, by bus (departs at 8:00 daily) the trip will cost $ 10.

If you want it to be easier, but a little more expensive, to get from Bangkok or Pattaya to Sihanoukville, you can buy a comprehensive transfer from a travel agency from $ 25. The cost of such a trip will be slightly higher than self-organized, but there will be much less problems.

The Had Lek/Koh Kong border crossing is notorious for extortion by border guards when applying for a visa, so we highly recommend that you apply for an electronic visa to Cambodia (E-Visa) in advance, and at the same time save a whole page in your passport. The transition works from 7:00 to 20:00, so if you don't have time by that time, you'll have to spend the night in Had Lek or Trat.

A taxi from Phnom Penh or Phnom Penh Airport costs from $25 to $40 and will take about 3 hours.

🚆 By train

There is a branch line between Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville, but it is badly damaged and trains are not running on it yet. Currently, its reconstruction is underway, and it is planned to launch a passenger train.
