The city of Yessentuki itself is a compact resort, and you can easily see all its main sights in one day. The main things here are the mineral water pump rooms and the Resort Park. But if you've come for a week or more, the vacation can quickly start to feel monotonous. That's why it makes sense to plan trips to the surrounding area in advance. Mountains, rocks with rings, salt lakes with healing mud — all of this is a half-hour to an hour's drive away. The main thing is to have your own transport or be prepared to order a taxi (public transport is spotty here). In this article, we've gathered tried-and-tested places you can visit on your own to make your vacation richer.
Getting straight to the point: the most convenient way to explore the surroundings of Yessentuki is by your own car. Taxis from apps (Yandex Go, Maxim) also work, but trips to distant places (like the Honey Waterfalls) will cost more than an excursion. Electric trains are only an option for Beshtau. Forget about other places: buses run rarely or not at all.
If you don't have your own car — no problem. Some of the places described below can be visited by public transport, and some with an excursion. You can buy them at the excursion stands on Teatralnaya Square, or book online. Here are trusted platforms where we book ourselves:

🛠 What to bring on a trip around the area
Don't repeat our mistakes: the first time we went to Beshtau in sneakers and without water. Good thing there was a spring near the trail. Here's the minimum set that will actually come in handy:
- Water — at least 1.5 liters per person. Even if it's not hot, you'll drink it all on the climbs.
- Snacks — sandwiches, bars, nuts. There are no cafes on Beshtau or Tambukan.
- Trekking poles — they really help on Beshtau, especially on the descent.
- Comfortable hiking shoes — sneakers with good tread. Not flip-flops or ballet flats.
- Hat and windbreaker — the weather in the mountains changes instantly.
- Cash — some parking lots and the water park don't accept cards.

🚌 Where to go from Yessentuki: full list of places
The main attractions around Yessentuki are gathered in this list — from mountains and waterfalls to neighboring cities. For each place, we've indicated the best way to get there: sometimes an electric train is enough, other times only by car or taxi. Choose what suits you best and plan your route.
St. George Convent
The St. George Convent is a modern white-stone complex outside the city that's worth visiting even for non-religious tourists. White marble architecture, a well-kept green area with flower beds, a bronze monument to St. George, and a view of Mount Beshtau — that alone is worth the trip. On the grounds, you can take holy water from the spring, dip in the baptismal font, and, if you wish, book a tour. The convent is outside the city, so it's better to set aside an hour or two for it and go purposefully. More about St. George Convent and how to visit it.

Temple Complex 'Rio de Kavkaz'
This is an unusual place, something like a leisure park and a complex of several churches. Locals come here not only to visit the churches but also just for weekend relaxation. The complex is notable primarily for the tallest sculpture of Jesus Christ in Russia. Its height is 22 meters, and by analogy with the statue in Rio de Janeiro, this monument was nicknamed Rio de Kavkaz. The complex contains: the Church of the Apostles Peter and Paul, the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Chapel of Elijah the Prophet, the Chapel of Joachim and Anna and Peter and Fevronia, and the Chapel of the Life-Giving Trinity. All buildings are modern; there are no old churches. There's also a mini-zoo, a museum of old Soviet vehicles, and a playground. More about the St. Peter and Paul Temple Complex or Rio de Kavkaz.

🚶 How to get there: by your own car or taxi (from central Yessentuki ~150–200 RUB). Or by minibuses #4 (from the railway station), #10 (from the bus station), then a short walk. You'll have to walk up the hill to the statue itself. Complex on the map.
Mount Beshtau
This is the highest mountain in the vicinity of Pyatigorsk (1400 meters) and a real magnet for anyone wanting to stretch their legs after sanatorium lounging. But be honest with yourself: this is not a 'one hour before lunch' walk. The ascent takes 3-4 hours one way on a good trail, and the descent another 2-3. You need a basic fitness level — at least 'can walk 15 km without getting winded'. We saw families with kids aged 10–12 — they managed, but the parents were loaded with backpacks. The trails are marked, it's hard to get lost. It's best to start early in the morning to get down before dark. At the top — great views of Elbrus and the entire Caucasus range, if you're lucky with the weather. More about Beshtau and how to climb it.
Practical information
🕐 Opening hours: 24/7, better to start at 7-8 AM.
💵 Admission / ticket price: free.
🚶 How to get there: by your own car or taxi (from Yessentuki ~500–700 rubles one way). Or by electric train to Lermontovsky station: exit, go left past the buildings, cross the railway tracks, and walk straight 4 km to the ring road around the mountain (start of the trail). Or to Zheleznovodsk (a gentler route). Mountain on the map.
Lake Tambukan
This is a large salt lake on the border with Kabardino-Balkaria. The local mud is considered one of the best in Russia, and you can smear yourself with it completely free. But be warned: the smell of hydrogen sulfide is strong, and after bathing, your skin will feel tight, like after a clay mask. Swimming is allowed, but doctors recommend staying in the water no longer than 10-15 minutes — due to high mineralization, you might get skin irritation. The lake is shallow, so it's safe for children. But there's a catch: the only convenient access is via a dirt road from the village of Etoko. After rain, it can get muddy, so it's better to go in a car with high ground clearance (not a low sedan). More about Lake Tambukan.
Practical information
🕐 Opening hours: 24/7.
💵 Admission / ticket price: free.
🚶 How to get there: only by your own car or taxi (from Yessentuki ~600–800 RUB). From the main highway E50/E117, turn into the village of Etoko, at the first turn left onto the dirt road, after 1 km — the lake. Lake on the map.
Ring Mountain
A rock with a round hole, resembling a giant ring, is one of the symbols of the CMW. Located 9 km from Kislovodsk. The climb is short but steep: about 20 meters in height (like a 6-story building). At the bottom, there's a market with souvenirs, honey, and tea. At the top — several grottoes and an excellent viewpoint. On a clear day, you can see Elbrus. We were there on a cloudy day, but were still impressed. The downside: it's always crowded here, especially on weekends. Come by 9 AM to take photos without the crowd. More about Ring Mountain.

🕐 Opening hours: 24/7, best during the day.
💵 Admission / ticket price: free, parking ~100 RUB.
🚶 How to get there: by your own car or taxi from Yessentuki (~800–1000 RUB one way). Or by bus to Kislovodsk, then taxi. Electric train is inconvenient (the station is in the center of Kislovodsk). Mountain on the map.
Honey Waterfalls
The most 'hyped' place in the area. Here you'll find everything: cafes, souvenir shops, a mini-zoo, horse rentals, a trolley, even gazebo rentals with barbecues. The waterfalls themselves are not Niagara, of course, but they're pleasant. The main one is only 18 meters high, but in season they are full-flowing and surrounded by greenery. The downside — paid entry (200 rubles per adult) and a huge number of tourists. The plus — infrastructure: you can come for half a day, grill kebabs, ride a zip line. We advise bringing your own food, because prices at the local cafe are steep. More about Honey Waterfalls.
Practical information
🕐 Opening hours: officially from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, but you can come earlier.
💵 Admission / ticket price: 200 RUB / adult, 100 RUB / children. Parking 100 RUB (or free 100 m before the entrance). Gazebo rental from 300 RUB/hour.
🚶 How to get there: only by your own car or taxi (~1200–1500 RUB from Yessentuki one way). Waterfalls on the map.
Water Park 'City of the Sun'
The only full-fledged water park in all of the Caucasian Mineral Waters. Located in the village of Inozemtsevo (between Pyatigorsk and Zheleznovodsk). It has 7 pools, adult slides ('Toboggan', 'Cyclone', vertical 'Cannon'), a heated kids' zone, jacuzzi, and cafe. Only open in the warm season, usually from June to September. Prices: adult ticket 2000 rubles, child (under 140 cm) — 1500. Payment only in cash — this is important! Cards are not accepted. Free parking. About a 20-minute drive from Yessentuki.

🌴 Kislovodsk: a walk through the greenest resort of the CMW
If you want some variety, hop on an electric train — and in 40 minutes you're in Kislovodsk. This is the greenest and, arguably, the most elegant resort of the CMW, with a huge national park (almost 1000 hectares), therapeutic walking trails, and the famous narzan. Unlike quiet and intimate Yessentuki, there's more tourist hustle, luxurious resort architecture, and great mountain views. Be sure to stroll along Kurortny Boulevard from the Colonnade, drink narzan at the Main Narzan Gallery, take the cable car above the Valley of Roses, and find the 'Master of the Mountain' in the grotto. Full guide to the sights of Kislovodsk.

⛰ Pyatigorsk: the most attraction-packed resort of the CMW
Pyatigorsk is the largest and liveliest resort of the CMW. It has the most attractions, restaurants, and tourists. While Yessentuki is all about quiet treatment, Pyatigorsk is buzzing with life. Be sure to walk through 'Tsvetnik' Park (the oldest park in the resort), visit Proval Lake (the one from 'The Twelve Chairs'), take the cable car up Mashuk Mountain to the famous direction signs, and if you have energy left, visit the dueling site and Lermontov's grave. Full guide to the sights of Pyatigorsk.

🚶 How to get there: most convenient by electric train from Yessentuki railway station (~150–200 RUB, 30–40 minutes). Pyatigorsk station is a 15-20 minute walk from 'Tsvetnik' Park and the main attractions. You can also get there by taxi (~600–800 RUB) or minibus.
🌴 Zheleznovodsk: the quietest and greenest resort with a unique lake
Zheleznovodsk is the most compact and quiet resort of the CMW. There are no noisy avenues or crowds of tourists, but there is a beautiful Resort Park with a Cascade Staircase and fountains, the famous Smirnovsky and Slavyansky springs, and most importantly — Resort Lake with a full-fledged beach area (sun loungers are free!). Here you can swim and sunbathe, not just sit by the hotel pool. If you want complete relaxation and solitude with nature — this is the place for you. Full guide to the sights of Zheleznovodsk.

🚗 What if you go further?
In fact, this is just the tip of the iceberg. If you have your own transport and a couple of extra days, you can drive from Yessentuki to Dombay (3 hours), Arkhyz (2.5 hours), or Chegem Waterfalls (2 hours). But these are already full-day trips requiring an early start. We've gathered all the interesting places on one map — download the points and plan your route.

Important warning: not all attractions are accessible by public transport. To Tambukan and the Honey Waterfalls — only by car or taxi. Budget from 1000 to 3000 rubles per day for trips if you decide to use taxis.
