The Catherine Mile
The Catherine Mile

In the yard The Literary and Art Museum of the Old Crimea has organized a small open-air museum, the central attraction of which is a sign in the form of a pillar called "Catherine Mile". Such pillars were installed along the entire route of the motorcade of Empress Catherine II during a trip from St. Petersburg to the Crimea in 1787, and they can still be found in different parts of the Crimea along the roads, and all of them are original historical monuments.

The exact number of pillars in the Crimea could not be established, but presumably there could be about 55 of them. Currently, only 6 have survived in Crimea, one of them can be seen here.

It would be dishonest to advise you to come here and see this historical monument, because you can see such signs for free, just search for them on tourist maps, for example, Organic Maps. Yes, and the entrance fee here is unreasonably expensive.

The Russian mile is very different from the world's systems of measures. Over the centuries, the length of the Russian mile has changed, but specifically during the reign of Catherine 1 Russian mile was equal to 7 versts or 7467.6 meters.
