Theoretically, you can drive to the peninsula through the territory of Ukraine, but in practice it is problematic, so today the only reasonable option to get to the Crimea by car is a ferry. Traffic for cars on the bridge under construction is planned to open only in December 2018, so if you plan to relax in the Crimea in 2018, arriving there by car, you will definitely have to use the ferry.

In general, the ferry "port Caucasus" - "Port Kerch" in the Crimea is now working perfectly. Now there are no huge queues for several days in the high season (July, August), which were in 2014 and 2015. Now new ferries have been added, the organization of work and movement has become more coordinated, electronic tickets have appeared, and the hype demand for the Crimea has decreased. Now in the off-season or at the beginning of the season there are no queues at all, and in the peak season the queues are small. Only bad weather can interfere with the work, and then the work of the crossing is suspended, and the queue grows. And yet, according to tradition, a huge flow of tourists leaves the peninsula in the last days of summer in order to have time for the beginning of the school year, and there is nowhere to go: either stand in line or go at another time.

How to get to the ferry to Crimea by car

From whatever city of the Russian Federation you go (excluding Sochi), your path will pass along the M4 highway. It is a great track, well equipped, with some paid sections. So far, you need to pay for the movement from Moscow to the Voronezh region, and in the Rostov and Krasnodar Territory the movement is free. However, even for paid sites there are free alternatives. Everything you need to know about tolls can be found on the Rosavtodor website. If you are not moving from Moscow, then you will hardly need this information.

Directly to the crossing you can get through Krasnodar, but there is another road, through Leningrad, Timashevsk, Slavyansk-on-Kuban. The last road is calmer, besides you will pass the possible traffic jams of Krasnodar. Now, in connection with the construction of the bridge, certain sections of the route are being reconstructed, the situation is constantly changing, so before the trip it is best to monitor the situation through modern navigators, for example Yandex.a navigator that shows all the current congestion, and determine the fastest route.

Route map

In Crimea, the road from the crossing is new, recently repaired, but there are many narrow sections, one lane in each direction.

  • If you are going on vacation to Feodosia, Koktebel, Kurortnoye, Sudak, Novy Svet, Morskoe, Hirazhnoye, Rybachye, then it is better to go along the sea along the P29.
  • If you need to go to Alushta, Utes, Partenit, Gurzuf, Yalta, Koreiz, Alupka, Simeiz, etc. resorts of Greater Yalta, then there are options: through Simferopol on P23-E105, or along the sea on P29. The road through Simferopol goes around, longer by 60 kilometers, but it is wider and flatter here, and in general you will get there faster and spend less gasoline. The road along the coast is very winding, sometimes Serpentine, you need to move along it without experience slowly and carefully, as a result, you will spend more time and fuel. But when moving along the sea offers stunning views. In our opinion (the authors of the site) this is the most picturesque road in the Crimea.
  • If you need to go to Sevastopol, Yevpatoria, Nikolaevka and other resorts on the West Bank, then you definitely need to go through Simferopol.
