What to Expect and Is It Worth Visiting
Orthodox Church of St. Dmitry Solunsky (St. Stephen), part of the complex of ancient temples located on the territory of The Genoese fortress of Kafa in Feodosia. This is the only functioning temple in Feodosia with unique frescoes of the XIV century. Unfortunately, time has not spared the paintings and only fragments of ancient frescoes have survived, presumably painted by the famous Russian icon painter Theophanes the Greek.
According to the inscriptions on the frescoes, it can be established that the temple originally belonged to the Greek church. It was built in the XIV century, survived various historical epochs, but miraculously survived. In 2023 it was restored and today services are held in it.
The traveler Fyodor Konyukhov donated to the temple a casket with a cross and fragments of the relics of St. Dmitry Solunsky, brought from one of the destroyed temples of Syria.
Next to the shrine there is an Armenian spring built in 1491 – it is the oldest hydraulic engineering structure that provides drinking water to residents, up to the 80s of the XIX century. Water can be collected here today, but it flows in a thin trickle.
Demetrius of Thessalonica, or Demetrius of Thessalonica, is also known as Demetrius of Myrrh — a Christian saint, revered in the face of the great martyrs. Having received the appointment, Dimitri proved himself to be an open Christian, preached in the city and converted many of its inhabitants to Christianity.
News of Demetrius's activities reached the emperor and, returning from the war against the Slavic tribes, Maximian stopped in Thessaloniki. Before that, Demetrius instructed his slave Luppus to distribute his property to the poor, and himself, according to the hagiographer: "he began to pray and fast, thus preparing for the martyr's crown." Brought before the emperor for trial, Demetrius confessed himself a Christian and was imprisoned. A few days later, battles were staged in the city, in which the imperial favorite fighter Li defeated many opponents, including urban Christians, who were forced to fight with him. The Christian Nestor, who was present at the same time, joined the battle with the blessing of Demetrius and threw Leah off the platform onto spears. In anger, the emperor ordered Nestor to be executed immediately, and the next morning, and Dimitri
