What to Expect and Is It Worth Visiting
The Northern fort of Balaklava is located on the northern slopes of Mount Kefalo-Vrisi on the eastern/left bank Balaklava Bay and at an altitude of 212 meters above sea level. It is a circular system of ditches created right in the rocky soils during the First World War. It was planned to install artillery on the territory of the fortification, but the Revolution made its own adjustments, and construction was suspended. During the Great Patriotic War, the tunnel was used by the Nazis as a hospital, and in the post-war years there was a storage of explosives and ammunition.
The scale of this little-known tourist attraction is impressive. The total length of the ditches is 2 kilometers, and the maximum depth reaches 3 meters. The eastern and western moats are connected by a tunnel, which served not as a shelter from shelling, but for rapid movement. The thickness of the walls here is about a meter, the width of the corridors is about 2.6 meters with a height of up to 3.5 meters and a length of 124 meters. There are mines with ladders here, it was possible to quickly get to the surface. There were separate rooms for personnel with a capacity of 240 people.
To date, the entire territory of the fort is in a dilapidated state and under threat of development. The most inquisitive tourists come here to see the object firsthand, take apocalyptic photos on its background and climb the ruins.
