What to Expect and Is It Worth Visiting
Nazukin Embankment is the main walking and tourist area of Balaklava. Along it there are several hotels, shops, cafes and restaurants, historical buildings. Excursions, accommodation, boat trips are offered here right on the street, fast food and drinks are sold, there is a small market with goods for tourists. At the end of the beach there is a concrete city beach. In general, if there is anywhere for tourists to walk in a Balaclava, then along the embankment, there is nowhere else.
Initially, the Balaklava embankment was built in the middle of the XIX century from wood, but the locals dismantled everything for firewood for heating. In 1880 it was restored again and paved with stone. It received its current name already in the XX century in honor of the Soviet party leader, who in 1917 headed the revolutionary committee of the Balaklava Council, was the leader of the Bolshevik movement and one of the leaders of the Bolshevik underground during the Civil War in the Crimea.
On the embankment of Nazukin there is one of the most famous city monuments to the Russian writer A. I. Kuprin, whose fate and work were closely connected with this resort. He first arrived here in September 1904, and having fallen in love with Balaclava, settled for a long time. He wrote about his love for the town as follows:" in Balaclava, the end of September is simply charming. The water in the bay has turned cold, the days are clear, quiet, with wonderful freshness and a strong sea smell in the mornings, with a blue cloudless sky stretching God knows how high, with gold and purple on the trees, with silent black nights". During his stay here, he worked on the novel "Duel", the stories "Staff captain Rybnikov", "Dreams", "Toast", cycles of essays "Listrigony".
