Historical and archaeological complex Salachik

Historical and archaeological complex Salachik or Devlet-Saray is formed on the site of the disappeared village of Salachik, and is an open-air museum with several architectural and historical attractions: The Zyndzhirli Madrasah, the mausoleum of the first Crimean Khan Devlet Haji Gerai, the Ismail Gasprinsky memorial, the alleged Mengi-Giray mosque and the archaeological site of the medieval bath hamam. The Assumption Cave Monastery also belongs to the complex, although in fact it is located outside the complex and is visited separately and free of charge. There is also a former private museum of Larishes, which in fact is no longer a museum, and a small number of exhibits can be seen inside the building of the Zynjirli Madrasa.

You will not see anything exciting on the territory of Salachik, but it is difficult to overestimate the historical significance of this place. The fact is that Salachik was the first capital of the Crimean Khanate until 1532, and the first khan's palace was located here. After 1532, the capital was moved from here a few kilometers further from the impregnable fortress of Chufut-Kale, to where the Khan's Palace is now located. Actually, it was then that The Khan's palace of Bakhchisarai was built, and Salachik was abandoned and renamed Eski-Salchik, which means "old Salachik". In Soviet times, most of the Turkic names were replaced with new and more understandable ones. In particular, Eski-Salchik was renamed Staroselye, which is now a suburb of Bakhchisarai.

For some reason we don't understand, this attraction is not very popular among tourists, although it is located on the route of huge crowds of tourists visiting Chufut-Kale and Assumption Cave Monastery. We advise you, if possible, to look here and walk among the ruins of the first Crimean Khanate, especially since you can visit it using the same ticket that you can use to visit the Khan's Palace.

🚶 How to get there

Salachik and Zyndzhirli Madrasah are located on the outskirts of Bakhchisarai, a couple of kilometers from its tourist area (Salachik and Zyndzhirli Madrasah on the map). From the center of the tourist district of Bakhchisarai and the Khan's Palace on foot about 25 minutes and a little less than two kilometers. You can also take a taxi from 100 rubles or by city bus No. 2, which runs every 10-20 minutes, the fare costs 25 rubles in 2023. You need to take the bus to the final stop "Staroselye".

💥 We remind you that it is much more interesting to get acquainted with the sights of Balaclava with the help of excursions, and therefore we advise you to look at online booking options on these proven search and price comparison sites:
