What to Expect and Is It Worth Visiting
Attention! Judging by the latest information, in November 2022, Rio began to be disposed of. It is expected that it will take 3 years, and it will completely disappear. So hurry up to see him before it's too late!
The sunken ship "Rio" is a relatively new attraction in Gelendzhik district, located near the seashore near Kabardinka. This multi-tonnage cargo ship ran aground on the shore in 2018 during a severe storm. No one was injured in the accident, but the vessel remained in place, and most likely will remain here for a long time as a tourist attraction. It can be viewed from the outside for free, and for the most curious there are guided tours of the deck and part of the ship's premises for a fee. A ladder is equipped for climbing to the deck.
Unfortunately, due to the too high price of the visit, we will not recommend it for a mandatory visit with a lift to the deck. But just walking to this attraction and seeing the ship from the shore is definitely worth it. Well, if everyone has already looked and you don't mind the money, then you can go up to the deck, just keep in mind that you can't take pictures there.
A little history of the ship "Rio"
"Rio" was a vessel for the transportation of bulk cargo. In fact, it is still a working vessel, and, as they say during the excursion, all the equipment on the ship is in working condition, it just can't move.
Rio was built in Japan in 1985. Its length is 146.81 meters, and its total height is 42 meters. Although this is far from a record for ships, the Rio is still impressive in its size. After all, most of the hull, which is usually hidden under water, is now presented to the eye.
At the time of the accident on December 12, 2018, he was sailing under the flag of the Republic of Togo and was heading to the port of Novorossiysk, but due to a strong storm he got into an emergency situation and sent a distress signal. Unfortunately, the coastal rescue services could not come to the rescue, and the uncontrolled vessel washed up on the shore of Cape Doob, where it ran aground and is now there. None of the 21 crew members were injured in the accident.
The shipowner company received a payment for the accident from the insurance company and refused further operation, since it would cost too much to remove from the shoal.

🚶 How to get there
the sunken ship Rio is located on the shore a few kilometers from the center of Kabardinka towards Gelendzhik (sunken ship on the map). From the center of Kabardinka here is about 5 kilometers, from Gelendzhik about 20.
The easiest way to see RIO is to buy an excursion from local travel agencies, in which case you will be guided to the ship along safe trails or taken by boat, it depends on the excursion.
But is it worth spending money on a tour? After all, it is very easy to visit it yourself. You'll have to walk a little along the shore, but it's easy to do.
You need to get to the end of Mira Street in Kabardinka, the point of reference is a monument to those who died on the ship Admiral Nakhimov or the eco-hotel Scala. If you will be on your own transport, then you need to leave the car here, because you can't drive further. There are plenty of places for free parking here. You can also get here by taxi (from the center will cost from 150 USD), hitchhiking or local bus-minibus No. 31, but it goes very rarely. Next, you will have two options for walking:
- Through the eco-hotel Scala to the beach. Despite the fact that in some guidebooks there is information about the paid entrance to Scala beach, this is not true, the passage is free. In general, go ashore through the eco-hotel Scala, and then along the coast to the left for one and a half kilometers, and you will get to Rio.
- Via the Dob and Znamya Co-op. This is a longer and more difficult path, so we do not recommend it. It makes sense only if you can drive through the checkpoint of these SNT by car, then you can get almost to the ship. On foot, you will first have to climb the hill, go through the entire SNT, and then go down to the shore again.
These routes and trails to the ship are marked on the Openstreet Yandex Map Editor, in the Organic Maps apps, Maps.me and others, we recommend using them during a walk.
Just in case, we remind you once again that the best way to get acquainted with interesting places in the resort is excursions. And even better if they are held by local residents who know and love their city well. You can find and book group or individual excursions with reviews on these trusted sites:
