What to Expect and Is It Worth Visiting
The Trinity Cemetery is one of the sights of Yelabuga, a monument of history and culture of the Russian Federation. First of all, it is famous for the fact that the grave of the famous cavalryman Nadezhda Durova is located here, and her grave is a monument of federal significance. She was an outstanding female officer of the Russian army and a hero of the Patriotic War of 1812, and was glorified in Russian literature as the first female officer in the Russian army, although this is not true. In 1816 she retired and became a writer, lived in Yelabuga from 1831 to 1866 and ended her days here. Another place in the city is dedicated to her memory – The museum-estate of Durova, which is definitely worth a visit.
However, she is not the only one who is famous for this cemetery. It appeared in the XVIII century by decree of Empress Catherine II on the outskirts of Yelabuga (now it is already the center), and many prominent people of the city were buried here, including famous merchants, the parents of the artist Ivan Shishkin, merchants Staheevs, Girbasovs, Chernovs, clergyman Pavel Dernov and others.
On the territory of the cemetery in the XIX century, a stone Trinity Church was built to replace the old wooden one. But at the beginning of the XX century, under Soviet rule, the cemetery fell into disrepair, the church was completely destroyed, the territory was built up. Today, only the foundation remains of the church, but for believers it is a holy place. Now they are trying to revive the church, they even hold services on its foundation.
Well, another remarkable object in the cemetery is the sculpture of Nadezhda Durova riding a horse. It was installed in front of the entrance to the cemetery in 1993, its author was the Moscow sculptor Fyodor Lyakh.
