What to Expect and Is It Worth Visiting

Fire tower, Elabuga
Fire tower

Fire tower is one of the historical and architectural sights of Elabuga, located opposite Nadezhda Durova Museum on Moskovskaya Street. Perhaps this is not the place that you should definitely see in Yelabuga, but if you walk around the city and visit the Durova Museum, then pay attention to it. You can't visit it from the inside, you can only look outside and take a couple of photos, so you won't spend more than a couple of minutes near it.

Nevertheless, basha's story is quite fascinating, and the appointment is interesting. Fire towers were designed to alert about fires, so they were built at the locations of the fire brigade. The sentries on duty at the height watched the city, and when a fire broke out, they sounded the alarm, the fire brigade moved to the place. The sentry's work was considered extremely important. Only those people who knew the city well, had keen eyesight and good health were allowed to visit it, as they had to work without interruptions both day and night, regardless of weather conditions. The sentries on the tower acted according to the Moscow method, and every 15 minutes at night their vigilance was checked. If the sentry noticed a fire, he signaled with a whistle. Those on duty at the tower responded to this sound, indicating that they were awake and monitoring the situation. Signs with various signs and signals that were used in emergency situations were also placed on the towers. When a fire was detected, the sentry immediately began to ring the bell, after which he raised special metal balls if the fire happened during the day, or lit pre-prepared lanterns if the fire appeared at night.

Specifically, the Elabuga tower was built in the second half of the XIX century in the complex of buildings of the police department and the fire station organized there, and now it is the city fire station No. 75. The need for its construction arose after the massive fires that occurred in the city on August 22 and 23, 1850, and destroyed about 500 houses. The tower complex was erected according to a project drawn up by the Elabuga city architect.
