What to Expect and Is It Worth Visiting
This is an old active convent of Elabuga, a rather interesting place to visit, accessible not only for believers, but also for tourists. On its territory there is the Kazan Cathedral, the chapel of John the Baptist, as well as outbuildings and buildings for nuns and pilgrims. There is a church shop where you can buy candles, religious paraphernalia, and fresh church pastries. There is also a museum "House of Faith", which tells about the life of the monastery since its inception.
In general, initially in 1856 a women's religious community was founded here, and it received the status of a monastery already in 1868. By the beginning of the XX century, this was one of the largest women's monasteries of the diocese, there was a school, a gold-sewing and painting workshops. But he did not survive the Soviet era. In 1918, the authorities officially closed the monastery, but it continued to operate "underground" until 1928 as an "Orthodox Christian religious society" until it was finally closed. The nuns were evicted, the temple and the bell tower were dismantled for bricks, transferred to the New Building of the North Chemical Trust. Only the foundation of the temple has been preserved. Living quarters were set up in the monastery buildings. During the Great Patriotic War and until 1949, a prisoner of war camp worked here.
After the collapse of the USSR in 1993, part of the monastery premises was again transferred to the Kazan diocese, and in 1995 the monastic community was revived.
