What to Expect and Is It Worth Visiting
Devil's Hillfort - this is the most popular yelabuga attraction and the main tourist symbol of the city. It is under the protection of UNESCO. In the 10th-14th centuries it was a stronghold of the ancient State of Volga Bulgaria in the eastern Kama region. Here was a whole settlement with streets and houses, conveniently located on a hill at the mouth of a tributary of the Kama. But, unfortunately, only the stone tower has survived to this day, and even then restored. Almost all the remains of the settlement were dismantled by local residents for the construction of their houses even before the settlement was studied by archaeologists in the 19th century. The tower collapsed on its own in 1844, leaving only a small section on the north side with an arched doorway and a window above it. Only in this place the original masonry of rough stones on mortar with alabaster was preserved, and the rest of it was restored from new materials on the old foundation. You can not enter the tower, the entrance is closed by an iron door. Nearby there are a few more ruins left from the dwellings of the settlement, but they are also restored.
In 2007, the tower was again restored, the area around was ennobled for tourists: paths were laid, benches were installed. From the very top of the hill there is a panoramic view of the city and the Kama river. At the entrance to the hill there is a wooden entrance tower, a Millennium Park with a monument to the Bulgar Khan Ibrahim I Bin Muhammad is equipped, there is a restaurant. With all this, it is difficult to call the attraction itself spectacular and very interesting, since its inspection will take no more than 20 minutes.
