What to Expect and Is It Worth Visiting
Lake Mochoh is a beautiful alpine lake in Dagestan with turquoise water. It is located at an altitude of 1632 meters above sea level and is surrounded by high mountains and green alpine meadows. It is a popular holiday destination among Dagestanis and among independent tourists throughout the year. In addition, the lake is easily accessible, you can drive up to it by car.
The reservoir was formed as a result of a landslide in 1962. It has a small size, only 1250 by 500 meters, the average depth of the lake reaches 20 meters, the maximum is 60 meters.
We advise you to come to Mochoh Lake for the whole day, but if you haven't had time to look, you can spend the night in one of the guest houses nearby or in a tent to see this place in all its glory in the morning. In addition, the most impressive views are usually at sunrise and sunset. Recently, the infrastructure around the lake has been gradually developing. There are new cafes, souvenir shops, water activities. There are rental points for catamarans, saps, and ATVs. For example, in 2023, a 30-minute catamaran ride cost 300 rubles. There is a beach area. You can go fishing.
Vacationers can swim, although there are signs on the shore about the prohibition of bathing. And not everyone can plunge into the cool water. After all, the average water temperature in summer is only +16C and even on the hottest day it will barely warm up to +20C. In winter, the lake freezes and becomes a favorite place of entertainment and recreation for local and visiting rare tourists. Cafes are open during this period. You can go ice skating and snowmobiling.
How to visit the lake
You can plan a trip to the lake by combining it with a visit to the sights in the village of Khunzakh, which is 33 kilometers from it.
