Memorial complex Akhulgo or Memorial of memory and common destiny is dedicated to the feat of the Caucasian people and the courage of Russian soldiers during the fierce battle on Mount Akhulgo (1838-1839). In order to preserve the memory of these historical stages, about the exploits of people, for the edification of the inadmissibility of strife and wars in the future. The museum is part of the National Museum of the Republic of Dagestan.
A bit of history
The memorial was created in 2017 at this place for a reason and its name is closely related to the events that took place in these places during the Caucasian War. The center of events was Mount Akhulgo with the fortress of the same name, which housed the army of mountaineers under the leadership of Imam Shamil. During a clash with the Russian army led by General P.H. Grabbe, Shamil's army was defeated, and he himself fled to Chechnya. The mountaineers fought hard, women and children took an active part in the defense, rushing into the heat literally with their bare hands. According to some reports, more than two thousand mountaineers and 500 Russian soldiers were killed, thousands were wounded.
Assault on Akhulgo was a military operation conducted in June – August 1839 by a detachment of a Separate Caucasian Corps under the command of Lieutenant General Grabbe. The purpose of the operation was to blockade and capture the headquarters of Imam Shamil in the village of Akhulgo, located on the mountain plateau of the same name in Dagestan.

This cultural and historical complex is located in the foothills of Akhulgo, it includes an exhibition task and a 17-meter tower, surrounded by stunning scenic views of Mount Akhulgo, mountain ranges, canyons, gorges and mountain rivers.
There are few exhibits in the exhibition hall, among them books that mention the event, the original cannon, paintings and images of military leaders of that time, old manuscripts. The central exhibit is a smaller copy of the panorama painting "The Storming of the village of Akhulgo" by the artist F. Roubaud (1890), restored from a preserved photograph. The original of the painting in full, unfortunately, has not been preserved, but some of its parts can be seen here and in the Dagestan Museum of Fine Arts.
The museum staff will conduct an educational tour for you for an additional fee. And given the specifics of the museum, we recommend visiting it only with an escort. The inspection also includes a climb to the tower, from where unique and exceptional natural landscapes open.

It is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00, Monday is a day off. The ticket office closes at 17:15.

🚶 How to get there
The memorial complex is located near the village of Ashilta in Untsukulsky district (Ahulgo on the map). It is reached by a good paved road. There is not much parking space. The road from the complex towards Chechnya goes through a tunnel, in front of the entrance, to the right of it, a staircase leads to the top of Mount Akhulgo, which is clearly visible thanks to the railings tied with numerous ribbons. If you wish, you can go up there and visit the sacred place where thousands of people died, as well as enjoy magnificent views of the bend of the Andian Koisu River and the mountain slopes.
