What to Expect and Is It Worth Visiting
Andalal Tower is a replica of the watch signal tower, an example of ancient Dagestan architecture of the Middle Ages. Although on the Internet it is sometimes called an old tower and attributed to it an interesting centuries-old history, in fact the tower was built only in 2005 in conjunction with the construction of the Gunibskaya HPP, next to which it is located. It is interesting except that you can climb up the steep steps, and from there you have a good view of the surroundings, the hydroelectric dam and the powerful artificial waterfall that it forms. You can stop here for a few minutes on the way to Gunib, Karadakh gorge, ghost village Gamsutl and other attractions of mountainous Dagestan.
Nevertheless, the tower is connected with history, albeit by a thin thread of events. It is dedicated to the victory of the Dagestani peoples over the Persian conqueror Nadir Shah, and Andalal received its name on behalf of the medieval free community called Andalal, formed by several villages of the Avars. In the XVIII century, Nadir Shah attacked Dagestan with a 100,000-strong army, capturing almost the entire territory, only the Accident remained unconquered. The Andalal Community Council created and headed the militia, which gave a worthy rebuff to the Persian army, as a result of which it was forced to flee Dagestan.
