Penghulu Abu Seman House in Kuala Lumpur: is it worth going, tours and how to get there

The Penghulu Abu Seman House is an authentic wooden house of a Malay village headman that was moved to the very center of modern Kuala Lumpur. The place is almost unknown to tourists but offers a rare opportunity to see traditional life without crowds. There's one catch: you can only go inside with an English tour at 11:00 AM or 3:00 PM. We'll tell you whether it's worth going out of your way for this and how to plan your visit.

An island of old Malaysia in a sea of modern skyscrapers — the Penghulu Abu Seman House

Description and is it worth visiting

The Penghulu Abu Seman House is a museum of a traditional Malay house, housed in the authentic village dwelling of a village headman named Penghulu Abu Seman. Originally located in the state of Kedah, the house was built without a single nail — only using wooden joints. In the 1990s, it was dismantled, moved to Kuala Lumpur, and reassembled in the garden of the Ascott hotel, later handed over to the Badan Warisan Malaysia foundation, which opened a museum here.

In our opinion, the place is interesting and definitely worth a visit, but only on one condition: you are willing to adjust to an English-language tour. Tours are held strictly at 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM. At other times, you can come in and walk around the grounds, but you won't be able to go inside the house. If you don't understand English or don't want to wait, there's little point in going out of your way — the outside of the house can be seen in 10 minutes. But with a guide, you'll learn why Malay houses have so many windows, what the carved wooden partitions are for, and how the village headman's family lived.

The house is built entirely of hardwoods without a single nail
A bird-shaped boat — these were used in Kedah state for river travel
The museum grounds are well-kept and green — pleasant just for a walk, even if you don't get inside

🕐 Opening hours and tour times

The museum is open from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Monday and public holidays are days off. English-language tours are held strictly on schedule: at 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM. At other times, you cannot go inside the house; you can only walk around the grounds. If you want a tour at another time for a group, you need to book and pay the full cost for the group in advance (we recommend checking details on the official website of the Badan Warisan Malaysia foundation).

💵 Admission / ticket price

For foreign tourists aged 17 and over — 20 MYR (4.9 USD). Children 7–16 years old — 10 MYR (2.45 USD). Children under 7 — free. Tickets for locals are half the price. The cost includes the tour if you come at 11:00 AM or 3:00 PM.

🚶 How to get there

The house museum is located in the central part of Kuala Lumpur, in the Golden Triangle area, at 2 Jalan Stonor (museum on the map). The location is a bit off the main tourist areas and metro stations:

  • From the Petronas Twin Towers (KLCC) — about 2 km;
  • From the center of Chinatown — about 3 km;
  • From the Bukit Bintang area — about 1 km.

There is a Conlay metro station nearby (MRT Kajang line), but it does not pass through the main tourist areas. Therefore, it is most convenient to get there either by taxi via apps (a trip will cost from 10 MYR (2.45 USD)), or take a walk from Bukit Bintang (10–15 minutes), or take the metro to Conlay with transfers. Drivers will be pleased to know there is a small free parking lot on the museum grounds.
