Petronas and Menara Towers: why compare them

View of Petronas from Menara's open observation deck — probably the best in the city

Kuala Lumpur has two main high-altitude points for tourists: the Petronas Twin Towers and Menara KL Tower. Both offer panoramic views, both are the city's calling cards. But in terms of feel, logistics, and price, they are completely different stories. We'll tell you everything as it is, so you can decide where to spend your time and money.

Comparison in a table: Petronas vs Menara

Views and observation decks

It's hard to compare the views directly because the angles are different. From Petronas, you look at the city and at the other twin tower — it's very cinematic. From Menara, you look at the whole city, including Petronas themselves (and that's the classic postcard view).

From the Petronas skybridge (42nd floor), views are through thick glass, but still impressive
And from Menara's open terrace, Petronas is visible without any obstruction — absolutely stunning

Ticket prices

It's important to understand right away: prices for foreigners are steep at both locations. But there is a range.

Conclusion on prices: Menara is cheaper, especially if you take the indoor observation deck (but more on that below). Petronas is more expensive, but it includes both the bridge and the 86th-floor observation deck. However, at Menara you can buy a ticket only for the open terrace — it's more expensive than the indoor one, but gives you much more excitement.

Purchase difficulty and queues

This is where the difference is colossal. Petronas is a quest. Menara is a breeze.

  • Petronas: tickets need to be bought several days in advance online (Russian cards aren't accepted everywhere, but you can use Trip.com). The visit time is strictly fixed; you are escorted in a group, given 15 minutes on the bridge and 15 minutes on the observation deck. You can't be late. Buying tickets at the ticket office on the day of your visit is almost impossible.
  • Menara: you can come at any time, buy a ticket on the spot (or online on Trip.com with an open date). No one limits your time at the top — you can stay all day. Queues at the ticket office are small, especially if you come in the morning or closer to evening.

Our advice: if you're a spontaneous traveler and don't like strict schedules — Menara is your option. If you dream specifically of Petronas — plan 3–5 days in advance and prepare for discipline.

Experience and atmosphere

Personal opinion (we've been there more than once):

  • Petronas is an icon. The elevator ride itself, walking across the bridge between the towers at a height of 170 meters — that's a wow effect. But there's no sense of space and height because you're indoors the whole time. And the constant escort of the group is a bit annoying — you can't just hang out and watch the sunset or catch both day and evening.
  • Menara (open terrace SkyTerrace) is freedom. You're in the open air (the railing is high, but not solid), the glass floor of SkyBox tickles your nerves. And most importantly — this is where you get the best view of Petronas, especially at sunset and at night. The indoor observation deck at Menara, unfortunately, is disappointing: dirty windows and glare from the interior lighting ruin all the pleasure.

Important warning about Menara: don't buy a ticket only for the indoor observation deck. Money down the drain. Buy the SkyTerrace (open) ticket or the combination ticket, but better just the open one. The price difference of 60 ringgit is worth the emotions.

Pros and cons of each attraction

Petronas Twin Towers

  • ✔ Pros:
    • The main symbol of Malaysia; being in KL and not going up is like being in Paris without seeing the Eiffel Tower.
    • The skybridge between the towers is a unique feature.
    • Views from the 86th floor (360 meters) are higher than from Menara (276 meters).
    • Below are KLCC Park, Suria KLCC shopping mall, and the evening fountain show.
  • ❌ Cons:
    • Difficult to buy tickets, especially in high season.
    • Strict visit time and time limits on the platforms.
    • The glass on the observation deck is a bit dirty and creates glare.
    • The price is higher than for Menara's indoor observation deck.

Menara KL Tower

  • ✔ Pros:
    • Tickets are easy to buy on the day of visit; no strict time slots.
    • The open SkyTerrace observation deck offers stunning views and a feeling of flight.
    • The best angle for photos of the Petronas Towers (for Instagram).
    • You can stay at the top as long as you want — watch the sunset and leave under the stars.
    • The glass SkyBox cube for extreme selfies.
  • ❌ Cons:
    • The indoor observation deck is a complete disappointment (dirty windows, glare).
    • The height is lower than Petronas' 86th floor.
    • Getting there on foot is not very convenient (it's on a hill, but there's a free shuttle).
    • Doesn't have the iconic status of Petronas.

What to choose? Final verdict

If you want one simple answer — here it is: both attractions are worth visiting, but if you have to choose just one, we recommend Menara with the open SkyTerrace terrace to most tourists. Why? Because the experience of the open platform and the view of Petronas (and the whole city) surpasses the guided tour inside the twin towers. Plus, you're not dependent on tickets and time.

But there are nuances:

  • Choose Petronas if: you're an architecture fan, you specifically want to walk across the bridge between the towers, you're willing to plan ahead and don't mind a strict schedule.
  • Choose Menara (SkyTerrace) if: you want the best panoramic photos, value freedom, don't like queues, and want to watch the sunset with a drink (your own — there are bars at the top).
  • The ideal option: do both. But if your budget is limited — start with Menara, and see Petronas from below in KLCC Park (it's free and very beautiful, especially in the evening with the fountain show).

Our tip: if you do decide to go up Petronas, buy tickets for the evening slot (after 6:00 PM). The city lights up, and you can catch both dusk and night. But remember — time on the observation deck is limited, so don't dream of spending hours there.
