Kuala Lumpur Craft Complex (Muzium Kraf): museum, workshops, and is it worth going

The Craft Complex (Muzium Kraf Kuala Lumpur) is a large cultural center where you can see traditional Malaysian crafts and try your hand at them. People come here not for another magnet, but to see with their own eyes how real works of art are created, and even make something unique with their own hands. Entry to the museum is free, and workshops cost very little money. We'll tell you why this place is worth your time and how to find it, and we also suggest watching our video about visiting it, which is embedded in the article.

Description and is it worth visiting

The Craft Complex (Muzium Kraf Kuala Lumpur) is a whole cultural center designed to introduce visitors to the numerous crafts and folk art of Malaysia. This place is not the top attraction in the city, and few foreign tourists visit it, but, in our opinion, that's a real shame. We think it's a worthy place, and if you have time, we definitely recommend visiting it. Moreover, it will be interesting even for children.

The entire complex is an area of several buildings, and there is even its own parking lot. For tourists, two main areas are interesting and accessible: the free museum building and the craft workshops. In the museum building, a large exhibition of crafts awaits you: batik, textiles, making traditional 'Keris' daggers and bronze utensils, and much more. The exhibition is truly interesting and educational if you don't rush and don't skim through everything. There are interactive exhibits and films explaining the manufacturing processes. As is typical in such places, there is a large shop selling products on the first floor. Here you can buy very high-quality handmade gifts, but the prices, of course, are high. However, you get exactly what you pay for.

The other area is the workshops. In several pavilions built in the form of traditional houses, popular traditional crafts are presented, where you can try your hand and make a souvenir with your own hands during workshops. And it can be not just a trinket like a piece of fabric with a pattern, but a truly useful item, for example, a bag decorated using the batik technique. Here you can try at least batik, kite making, and embossing. The price per workshop is from 10 MYR (2.52 USD). You don't need to book workshops in advance; you can come and choose what you like on the spot.

In general, we definitely recommend visiting the Kuala Lumpur Craft Complex, Muzium Kraf. Unlike ordinary museums, where even the most curious person will get bored with rows of countless historical exhibits, everything here is different, everything is somehow 'alive'. The main thing is to plan enough time to not just walk through the exhibition but also to take a workshop. For this, it's better to set aside at least 2-3 hours.

🚶 How to get there

The Craft Complex is located in the central part of Kuala Lumpur, in the Golden Triangle, at 63 Jalan Conlay (museum on the map). However, it is located a bit away from the main tourist areas with hotels and metro stations. For example, from the Petronas Twin Towers (KLCC) it's about 2 kilometers, from the center of Chinatown — 3 kilometers, and the closest area is Bukit Bintang, from the center of which it's about a kilometer (you can read about the areas in our guide: Where to stay in Kuala Lumpur: guide to districts and hotels). There is a Conlay metro station nearby, but it is on a line that does not pass through tourist areas. So you'll have to either take a taxi (from 10 MYR (2.52 USD) via apps), take a walk, or take the metro to Conlay with transfers.
