Indonesia is made up of thousands of islands, but for the vast majority of travelers, the experience starts and ends with Bali. And that makes sense: it's got the perfect mix of beach relaxation, cultural sights, and well-developed infrastructure. However, according to insurance company stats, Bali is among the top spots in Southeast Asia for the number of claims made by tourists. And it's not just about scooters (though they are the biggest risk factor). Jellyfish, strong currents, accidents during treks to volcanoes or waterfalls, the occasional bout of food poisoning, encounters with wildlife and dangerous insects – all of this is part and parcel of a trip to Indonesia. So, you need to be smart when choosing your insurance for a trip to Indonesia, especially Bali.
✔ Why You Need Insurance in Bali and Indonesia: It's Not Just About Treatment
Insurance isn't just an "in case I get sick" thing. In Indonesia, it covers a whole range of situations that could ruin your vacation and hit your wallet hard.
- Medical evacuation. Say you get injured on a remote island (like Komodo or during a trek to Mount Rinjani). The local clinic might not have the right equipment, and that's before you even figure out how to get there. Insurance will pay for an air ambulance or a ferry to a decent hospital – in Bali (like BIMC or Siloam), Jakarta, or even Singapore. This costs tens of thousands of dollars; without insurance, you'd be on your own.
- Compensation for flight delays or trip cancellations. Volcanic eruptions (Agung in Bali, Rinjani in Lombok) are pretty common in Indonesia. Airports can close for days. And we don't even need to get into the details about airport closures in Russia or unexpected travel bans. Insurance will cover forced expenses for hotels and food or refund your money for a ruined trip.
- Lost luggage and documents. Unfortunately, theft from rented scooters or villas does happen in Bali. Help from your insurer with document replacement and compensation for lost items can be a lifesaver.
- Legal assistance. If you get into an accident on a bike in Bali or have a run-in with local authorities, you'll need a lawyer. Insurance assistance services can provide that support.
⛔ Why Standard Tour Package Insurance Isn't Enough
Bali and Indonesia, in general, are all about active travel. Even if you're going just to "chill out," chances are you'll at least take a hike to a waterfall, rent a scooter, or grab a snorkel mask. And that's where the basic insurance that comes with a tour package almost always falls short.
Why? Because the exclusions list on a standard policy usually includes:
- injuries from riding a motorbike/scooter (unless you add a specific option);
- diving and snorkeling (especially deeper dives);
- surfing (considered an extreme sport);
- mountain trekking and volcano hikes (like climbing Mount Batur or Agung in Bali);
- injuries from falling off a bicycle.
Imagine this: you fall off your surfboard at Kuta Beach, cut your leg on some coral, and it gets infected. You contact your insurance, and they deny your claim because "surfing isn't covered." Treatment at a good clinic in Bali (like BIMC) will cost $1000-2000, and at a Singaporean hospital, it'll be many times more. So, it makes sense to buy a separate policy with extended coverage for the activities you're planning in Bali or on the other islands.
🔄 Where to Buy Insurance for Bali and Indonesia: A Review of Online Aggregators
The most reliable way to avoid overpaying and pick the best offer from dozens of insurance companies is to use aggregator sites. You set the parameters yourself and see all the options on one screen. We only use trusted services.
- Travel insurance on Cherehapa.ru — it's really easy to pick options for active pursuits here: you can specifically check boxes for "Surfing," "Diving," or "Trekking," and the system will only show you suitable policies. Perfect for planning a Bali trip.
- Travel insurance on Sravni.ru — a powerful aggregator that collects offers from all the big companies. Useful for quickly comparing prices for the same sets of risks.
- Travel insurance on Tripinsurance.ru — a specialized service where you can find policies with extended coverage for extreme sports, including diving up to 40 meters (relevant for the Gili Islands, Lembongan, and dive sites around Bali).
On any of these sites, you enter the country (Indonesia) or region (Bali), your travel dates, and you get a table with prices and terms. Usually, the price difference for the same set of options can be 2-3 times, so spending 10 minutes comparing really pays off.
🔍 What to Look for When Choosing Insurance for Bali and Indonesia
Indonesia and Bali specifically have some special requirements for insurance. Here's our own checklist:
- Coverage amount. A minimum of $50,000. But $100,000 is better, especially if you're planning serious diving, surfing, or long treks in remote areas. Evacuation from the middle of nowhere is expensive.
- COVID-19 coverage. This is pretty standard now, but check that it's explicitly stated. Treating COVID in Bali also costs money.
- Active pursuits. Definitely include the option that covers surfing, diving, and trekking. Read the limits carefully: for diving, there's often a maximum depth (e.g., up to 30m). If you're a certified diver planning deep dives off Bali or the Gilis, look for a policy covering up to 40m.
- Riding a motorbike. The most important option for Bali. The policy should state that you are covered to ride a motorbike with a certain engine size (usually up to 125cc or 250cc) and that having an International Driving Permit (IDP) is mandatory. Without a license, the insurance won't pay out, even with the option. Don't risk it!
- Deductible. For active trips, it's better to choose a policy with no deductible. With a deductible, it's cheaper, but for a minor injury (like a cut on coral), you'll pay the first $50-100 yourself.
- Evacuation. Make sure the policy includes emergency medical evacuation (medevac) in case of natural disasters or if adequate care isn't available locally. This is critical for island regions.
An important point from personal experience: read the fine print on what exactly the "active pursuits" option covers. In some policies, it might just mean walking in the park, while in others it covers full-on activities including diving. For riding a motorbike, you often need a specific clause stating that you are covered to drive a vehicle with an engine size up to 125cc or 250cc.
Remember!!! If you don't have a license with category 'A', no insurance policy will help you. Read here: Renting a Motorbike in Bali and What License You Need.
