Description and whether it's worth visiting

Building of the Zander Institute of Mechanotherapy

Zander Institute of Mechanotherapy (often just called "Mechanotherapy") is located in a beautiful historic building constructed in 1902. In fact, it's not an institute in the usual sense, but a medical-diagnostic center that houses unique exercise machines — mechanical massagers and devices for passive and active gymnastics, created over 100 years ago according to the system of Dr. Gustav Zander. Amazingly, they're still in working condition, and you can actually exercise on them.

But that's not the only thing that makes the building famous. This is where the gym scene from the cult Soviet film "Love and Pigeons" was filmed — movie fans will surely recognize the interiors and the antique apparatuses.

Today, anyone can visit the institute: you can come just for a tour (see the machines, hear the history), or you can even work out under the supervision of a doctor — the feeling is completely unusual, especially for those used to modern fitness centers.

Our honest opinion on whether it's worth visiting: This place is a must-visit in Yessentuki, even if you're not planning to undergo treatment. It's iconic both as a historical monument (the only surviving Zander hall in Russia) and as a "character" from a legendary film. Spending an hour or two is definitely worth it: you'll see living medical history and can take unique photos in front of century-old exercise machines (including the very ones that Uncle Mitya "worked out" on).

🕐 Opening hours

Monday–Friday: 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Saturday: 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Sunday — closed. Important: tours with the option to exercise on the machines are only conducted until 1:00 PM.

💵 Entry fee / ticket prices

Viewing the machines (tour, without exercise): 300 RUB.
Exercise session on the machines (40 minutes with a doctor present): 550 RUB.

Important detail: To work out, you first need to go to the "Nadezhda" sanatorium (located in another part of the city at 42a Pyatigorskaya St.), where you pay and sign a one-time agreement. Then you take that agreement to the mechanotherapy building. You can't just pay on the spot and start pedaling.

🚶 How to get there

The mechanotherapy building is located in Kurortny Park, not far from the main entrance and the drinking gallery. Exact address: 7 Andzhievskogo St. (institute on the map). You can walk from any park entrance — head towards the eastern part. It's about a 15-minute walk from the train station.
