What to Expect and Is It Worth Visiting

Alushta cromlech

Alushta cromlech near Alushta is a mysterious monument of antiquity, which is often called the Crimean Stonehenge. Like its famous British prototype, this ring is made of massive stones, created by the hands of ancient people. Only here the stones are small and low, and the scale, of course, is much more modest. The exact purpose of the structure remains a mystery, but there are such versions: perhaps it was an ancient calendar that monitors the movement of the luminaries, the burial place of the leader, or even a ritual sanctuary, a sundial.

The age of the monument is impressive – scientists attribute it to the Neolithic and Bronze Age, i.e. it was built presumably in the III millennium BC. First described by archaeologist V.F. Miller in 1886, the cromlech was an ideal ring of 29 vertical stones up to 1.5 m high, surrounding a stone-paved area with a central ritual pillar.

Today, 24 stones of the middle circle and 12 stones of the inner rectangle have been preserved. Initially, the complex probably consisted of 48 stones in the outer ring. Such precise geometry suggests its astronomical purpose — perhaps it was the oldest calendar or sanctuary.

Honestly, if you expect grandiose ruins or spectacular views, it may be worth choosing to visit other attractions of the Crimea, for example, go to Bakhchisarai district, where there are many cave towns and monasteries. But if you love different historical mysteries and believe in places of power, and there will be nothing to do during your vacation in Alushta, then a walk here will be interesting.

🚶 How to get there

The Alushta Cromlech is located on the outskirts of the city of Alushta near the Alushta motorcycle track and about three kilometers from the tourist area and the embankment (cromlech on the map). A dirt road leads directly to the attraction, along which, in good weather, you can easily travel by any transport, but in summer the passage can be closed with a barrier, and then you will have to leave the car and walk along a flat road without ascents and descent of 1 kilometer. This entrance or entrance is located on Vinogradnaya Street. It is easy to find it on Yandex maps or in the Orgamic map tourist map applications, Maps.me etc . You can upload points of interest to these maps from our map of Crimea and use it for navigation.

If you do not have your own transport, then you can get to Vinogradnaya Street by taxi (from 150 rubles, specify the address for ordering a taxi Vinogradnaya Street, 28). You can also get to this area of the city by buses and minibuses No. 8, 8a, 108 to the Night Market stop, and then one and a half kilometers on foot to the Cromlech.
