What to Expect and Is It Worth Visiting
The Gostiny Dvor building is one of the historical buildings of Chistopol, an architectural monument of the early XX century. Today there is an excellent coffee shop, a bank branch, a pharmacy and other retail and office outlets, as well as the city magistrate's court.
This building of retail shops was built at the beginning of the XX century, but then it was rebuilt in the period from 1913 to 1914. The architect from Chistopol P.I. Kovalevsky was responsible for the project. This monument of civil architecture combines several styles at once: eclecticism, classicism, pseudo-Russian architecture and Art Nouveau. The upper floors of the building in the past were occupied by members of the City Council, who received income from the shops located below.
During the Great Patriotic War, a hospital operated in the left wing of the building, and the right wing was given over to the editorial office of the newspaper "Prikamskaya Commune". The works of such famous poets and writers as N.N. N. Aseev, Z.N. Alexandrova, L.I. Oshanin, I.L. Selvinsky and many others were published there. All of them were forced to leave their homes and go to Chistopol because of the war. It was here, on August 26, 1941, that a meeting of the Council of Evacuees was held, at which the question of moving M.I. Tsvetaeva from Elabuga to Chistopol was discussed.
