Overview and Is It Worth Visiting
The folk narzan spring in Uchkulan is a natural, unofficial spot where mineral water springs directly from the ground. It's located on the outskirts of the village of Uchkulan, on the bank of the Kuban River, away from the main tourist trails. We don't have exact information about its chemical composition or medicinal properties, but locals say the water is very beneficial: it helps maintain health and strength, and is especially good for gastrointestinal issues. The water is ferruginous — this is evident from the characteristic rusty deposit on the rocks and the stream that flows from the spring into the river.
This place is more for adventure seekers and inquisitive travelers who enjoy finding something off the beaten path. It's probably not worth traveling here from far away specifically, but if you're exploring the Uchkulan Gorge or heading to Khurzuk, definitely check it out. Along the way, you can also visit another narzan spring — Indysh (24th Kilometer), which is located slightly downstream.
Besides the spring itself, there's another attraction here — the remains of an ancient water diversion channel. You can see it a bit higher up the mountain slope. Fragments of the masonry have been preserved; it's interesting to imagine how this system worked many years ago. And for those who enjoy wild camping, there's a flat area right there where you can set up a tent. Some tourists do indeed stop here for the night. But keep in mind: the Kuban River is very noisy, and its water comes from the glaciers of Elbrus, so you can feel a distinct chill coming from it even on a warm day. If you decide to stay overnight, be prepared for that atmosphere — with the sound of rushing water and the coolness.
Below, we'll explain exactly how to find this place, how to cross the river, and what else you need to know before visiting.

🚶 How to Get There
The folk narzan spring is located on the outskirts of the village of Uchkulan, on the left bank of the Kuban River (spring on the map). It's best to get there by your own car — the road to the bridge over the Kuban in Uchkulan is paved and passable for any vehicle.
The landmark is a suspension pedestrian bridge over the Kuban River. The bridge is in the eastern part of Uchkulan and is visible from the road. You can leave your car on the street before the bridge or on a small parking area near the bridge entrance (space is limited, but you can usually find a spot). Then cross the suspension bridge to the left bank. Immediately after the bridge, turn right and walk about 50 meters along the bank. The spring is right on the bank — you'll see a rusty-colored stream flowing into the Kuban. The spring bubbles from the ground and is easy to spot due to the characteristic iron deposit on the rocks.
If you're traveling without a car, you can take the Karachaevsk – Khurzuk minibus (it runs once a day; it's best to check the schedule at the Karachaevsk bus station). You need to get off in Uchkulan, then walk to the suspension bridge — about 1.5–2 kilometers from the center of the village.
If you decide to stay with a tent, choose a spot a bit further upstream from the spring — there are flat areas there. Keep in mind that at night, the river gives off a strong chill even in summer, so bring warm sleeping bags. And, as always, take all your trash with you — this place remains clean because of the rare tourist visits.
