What to Expect and Is It Worth Visiting
Shakyusn-Shume temple in Elista also known as old hurul, tourists often confuse it with the Temple Of The Golden abode of Buddha Shakyamuni in the city itself. In fact, Shakyusn-Syume is located on the outskirts of the city beyond its borders, on the road to the village of Arshan. The site for the construction was consecrated by the Dalai Lama XIV during his second visit to Kalmykia in 1992, and the temple itself was built in 1996.
It is executed in the traditional Tibetan style, but not as colorful as the main temple-the abode of Buddha Shakyamuni in the center of Elista. Around the Shakyusn-Xume steppe, wind, and nearby only a few houses in which monks live. On the territory there are three stupas, a small park with an alley of roses, at the entrance to the temple there are prayer drums. For the convenience of believers and visitors, free parking and toilets are provided. Opposite the temple across the street is an ethno-cafe in the form of traditional yurts near the main road.
If you are a believer or just interested in Buddhism, we advise you to visit this place. Just keep in mind that as of 2021, repairs are being carried out here, the completion dates of which are unknown.
🕐 Working hours
the temple is not a tourist attraction, so it is often closed. If you absolutely want to get inside (and it's worth it), ask the monks to open the doors for you, they do it with pleasure.
