What to Expect and Is It Worth Visiting
In the historical part of Derbent there is the only Orthodox church of the city - the Church of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In 1899, there was originally a parish school here. With the installation of the altar in 1901, the building inside the school turned into a church-school, and later a separate room was built nearby for educational purposes. Surprisingly, during the Soviet period, the temple was almost not damaged. In 1939, the church was closed, but in 1943 it was again handed over to the faithful, worship services resumed.
Today, the Church of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary is not only a tourist attraction, but also a functioning temple, but you can freely enter it while walking around Derbent. Unfortunately, on June 23, 2024, the church was subjected to an armed attack by terrorists. During these tragic events, 22 people died, including the rector of the church, Archpriest Nikolai Kotelnikov. Part of the temple was damaged, repairs are now underway. Despite this, the temple continues to work, its doors are open to tourists and believers.
