What to Expect and Is It Worth Visiting
Closer to the coast in the central part of Derbent there is a small museum dedicated to Emperor Peter I, or Peter I's house (Peter I's dugout). The museum opened in 2015 at the place where the king stayed during the Persian campaign in August 1722. He lived here for only a few days in anticipation of the cargo arriving from Astrakhan for his army.
On the site of today's brick building in those distant times, a low hut consisting of two small rooms was built specifically for Peter the Great. The roof of this stone building was covered with a layer of clay from above, which is why it was popularly nicknamed "Peter the Great's dugout." Over time, the house collapsed, and today only the remains of the lower stone layer are visible, allowing you to understand the dimensions of the structure. Subsequently, in order to preserve this important historical site, the building was covered with a glass dome, and also surrounded by brick columns.
There is a colonnaded pavilion next to the Emperor's House. It housed a tiny museum, where photographs, sketches and sketches related to this place are presented, temporary exhibitions of local artists are held. There is a monument to Peter I in front of the pavilion.
If you find yourself nearby on the way to the beach or are very interested in history, then you can go to this museum. But we will not recommend this place as a must-visit.
