Bala mosque in Derbent
Bala Mosque

Bala Mosque is an old mosque in the old town of Derbent, a monument of history and architecture of federal significance. To be honest, it is difficult to call it one of the "top" and spectacular sights of the city, but if you are walking along the tourist route in the old town, we advise you to pay attention to it. If you are lucky and the mosque is open, you will be able to see it from the inside. However, again, to be honest, we were inside and did not see anything remarkable in it that could interest ordinary tourists. However, the historical and cultural significance of the mosque's Ball is definitely there.

The Bala Mosque was built in the period from the XI to the XIX century and is an example of a typical quarter mosque. During the siege of Derbent in 1796 by Russian troops under the command of General V. Zubov, the building was severely damaged. After that, a new mosque was erected in its place in the form of a one-story building with a flat roof, but without a dome. In this form you will see it today. The inscription at the entrance indicates that the new building was erected in 1225 AH (which corresponds to 1812). The shape of the building is rectangular, although slightly irregular, apparently due to the layout of the old quarter of Magala. The northern facade of the building is decorated with three windows of various sizes. The facade is made of specially selected stones of different sizes, ranging from large-sized, reaching a meter in length, to small. It is believed that during the construction of the facade, the remains of stone were used, which remained after the repair of the Orta-Kapa gate and the southern city wall, damaged by the artillery of General Zubov.
