Getting Kicked Out of Your Hotel in Egypt but Your Flight Isn't Until Night? Relax, It's Solvable

A familiar picture: suitcase packed, sun at its peak, and the bus to the airport isn't until evening. The hotel asks you to vacate the room at 12:00, and that's not a tour operator's mistake, it's standard practice. We'll tell you how to avoid being stuck on the street with a suitcase without overpaying.

A typical hotel in Sharm el-Sheikh, where room extensions are arranged at the front desk

Imagine: you're lying on a lounger by the pool, sipping fresh juice, and then a hotel staff member comes up and asks: "When will you vacate the room?" You look at your watch – 11:30. And the transfer to the airport isn't until 19:00. Sound familiar? If so, you already know it's not the end of the world, just a small logistical hiccup that can be solved in various ways.

Let's clarify right away: the hotel isn't being greedy and the tour operator didn't make a mistake. A package tour with a late departure often doesn't include accommodation on the day of departure. The operator doesn't pay the hotel for the extra night, and your tour costs less. The 12:00 checkout time applies to everyone. But there are at least four ways to avoid wandering around with your suitcase until evening.

Leave Your Luggage in Storage and Go Explore

The simplest path. You check out at 12:00 and leave your suitcases in the luggage room at the front desk for free. Your stuff is safe, and you're free.

They'll most likely cut off your wristband: access to the pool, restaurant, and beach through the checkpoint will be closed. But you can head into town, go to the public beach, or visit a cafe. Zero cost.

If you're planning to explore the city, download offline maps in advance. Internet in Egypt is unreliable, and a map on your phone will save you from unnecessary adventures.

Extend the Room Officially

You go to the front desk, pay, and stay in the room until evening. It almost always works if there are available rooms. During high season, they might refuse.

The price depends on the hotel category: in a budget three-star in Sharm el-Sheikh it's $10–20, in an expensive five-star it's $50–100 and up, and the exact amount will be told to you on the spot. Whether it's worth it to spend a few more hours in the room and have lunch is up to you.

Arrange It with Baksheesh or a Gift

In Egypt, personal relationships solve a lot. Tourists in chats say they extended their rooms for $10–30 in "tips," and some – for a bar of "Alyonka" chocolate. Seriously.

The main thing is to arrange it in advance, not on the day of checkout. Get to know the administrator in the first days of your vacation, be friendly. Egyptians, once acquainted, become "like family" and readily meet you halfway for a small reward.

Stay by the Pool Without a Room

You don't need the room, but you want to swim and have lunch? Arrange with the administrator to keep your wristbands for a few hours or allow you to use the pool and restaurant. Sometimes for a small fee, sometimes just for a smile and friendliness.

Some tourists cut off their wristbands before checkout and then put them back on. We don't recommend doing this: it's dishonest toward the hotel. Better to arrange things openly.

What to Choose

If you're counting every penny – leave your luggage and go explore. If you want comfort – extend the room officially. If you know how to negotiate – try baksheesh. In Egypt, honesty and goodwill are valued above cunning, and it works.
