Short answer: yes, you need to pay. This is not a tourist tax or on-the-spot extortion, but an official entrance fee for the Tarutao National Marine Park, within which Koh Lipe is located. We paid upon arrival, and here's what's important to know.

Payment of national park entrance fee on Koh Lipe pier

How much does it cost? 200 baht per person (approximately 501 rubles). Children under 12 are usually free, but it's better to check on-site—we saw that parents sometimes aren't charged for young children, but there's no clear sign.

Where to pay? Immediately after disembarking from the ferry, at the pier (usually on Pattaya or Bundhaya Beach). National park staff sit at tables, collect money, and issue a receipt. It's best to keep it until the end of the trip—they may ask for it when going out to sea or on other islands in the park.

How to pay? Only in cash in Thai baht. If you're coming from Langkawi (Malaysia), you can pay in ringgit—35 MYR, but the exchange rate will be exorbitant. We advised withdrawing or exchanging baht in advance. There's an ATM at the pier, but with a 220 baht commission, so it's easier to prepare bills at home or on the mainland.

Why do you need to pay at all? The money goes towards maintaining the marine park, cleaning, and nature conservation. In our experience, Koh Lipe is clean (at least on the main beaches), and the reefs are still alive—apparently, the fees are working.

What if you don't pay? It won't work. The ferry won't let you leave until you pay. So consider it part of the ticket cost. By the way, if you plan to dive or snorkel in the park, they may charge an additional 200 baht for "park usage"—dive centers often warn about this.

💡 Life hack: the ticket is valid for several days. If you go on an excursion to neighboring islands (like Koh Adang), keep the receipt—rangers sometimes ask to see it.
