Koh Lipe — white sand and turquoise water

Koh Lipe is the southernmost inhabited island of Thailand, often called the "Thai Maldives." We have been there and honestly say: the water is indeed turquoise, the sand is white and soft, and the atmosphere is total relaxation. But there are nuances. In this article, we have collected answers to the most frequent questions so that you can quickly get up to speed and decide whether it is worth traveling across half the country to get here.

When is the best time to go to Koh Lipe?

We visited Lipe at the end of January — this is the ideal window. In the high season (November to May), the sea is calm, there is almost no rain, and you can swim and dive as much as you like. From May to October, monsoons blow, ferries run less frequently, and some hotels even close. But if you catch a window in the off-season, it will be cheaper and less crowded. The main thing is to check the forecast and ferry schedule.

How to get to Koh Lipe? Is it really difficult?

There is no airport on the island, only water access. The most popular route is from Pak Bara Pier in Satun Province (ferry takes 1.5–2 hours, ticket from 550 baht). Many people take a ready-made transfer from Phuket, Krabi, or Lanta — they pick you up from the hotel, take you to the pier, and put you on the ferry. Prices for such transfers start from 1750 baht round trip.

Another option is via Malaysia, from Langkawi Island. The ferry takes 1.5 hours, ticket about 160 ringgit. Note: this is an international flight, you need a passport and a pre-filled TDAC migration card. Upon arrival on Lipe, you will be charged 200 baht for entry to the national park (cash only).

Here is a detailed guide with all routes and prices — including schedules and photos of the piers.

Which beach to choose for accommodation?

The island has three main beaches, each with its own character:

  • Pattaya Beach — the main party hub, all infrastructure (cafes, bars, exchange offices) right on the shore. But due to boats, the water is a bit murky. Ideal if you want to be in the center of the action.
  • Sunrise Beach — our favorite. White sand, clear water, you greet the sunrise in the morning, and there are reefs nearby for snorkeling. Many hotels, but the atmosphere is relaxed.
  • Sunset Beach — a small beach with cool bars right by the water. Almost no hotels, but coming for sunset with a cocktail is a must.

There are also wild coves on the western shore — you can walk or kayak there for complete seclusion. We described each beach in detail in this review with photos.

How much do food, hotel, and activities cost?

Koh Lipe is an expensive resort by Thai standards. Prices are 20–50% higher compared to the mainland. Here is what you need to budget for:

  • Hotel: hostel — from 400 baht/bed, cheap double room — from 1300 baht, decent with air conditioning and breakfast — from 2500 baht. Better to book a month in advance, especially in high season.
  • Food: rice or pad thai in a street cafe — from 80 baht, tom yum with seafood — 350 baht, beer in a bar — 90–120 baht, mojito — from 100 baht. In supermarkets (Market, Patt Market), prices are lower than in 7/11.
  • Activities: mask rental — 100 baht/day, kayak — 150 baht/hour, full-day snorkeling tour — from 700 baht, diving — from 2800 baht.

Per person per day without hotel, you will spend at least 1000 baht if you don't splurge. And if you want exact figures, we calculated everything in the article about prices and budget.

Is it worth going to Koh Lipe at all?

If you are a fan of beach holidays, clear water, and are not afraid of a long journey — yes, it is worth it. This is one of the most beautiful places in Thailand, and still not spoiled by mass tourism. But if you are used to "all-inclusive" or traveling with small children — Lipe will be uncomfortable. There are no large hotels, roads are unpaved, and it takes a long time to get there.

We would come back here again to snorkel and lounge on Sunrise Beach. But plan your trip carefully: read the complete guide to Koh Lipe, watch our videos, and stock up on cash.

💡 Life hack: If you want to save money, buy food at the Market supermarket (near Ricci House Resort) and have a picnic on a wild beach. And for sunset, go to Happy Mojito on Sunset Beach — mojito for 100 baht and a great view.
