What currency is used in Vietnam and where to exchange money?

The national currency of Vietnam is the Vietnamese dong (VND). Banknotes in circulation range from 1,000 to 500,000 dong. Due to the large number of zeros, it can be confusing at first, so be careful when making calculations.

Where is the best place to exchange money in Vietnam:

1. Jewelry stores and exchange offices (Gold Shop): Often this offers the most favorable rate, especially in tourist areas. The sign usually says "Money Exchange" or "Gold". Don't hesitate to compare rates at several places on the same street.
2. Banks: The rate at banks may be slightly less favorable, but it is the most reliable and official method. Note that banks operate on a schedule and close early.
3. Airport upon arrival: Convenient to have cash immediately for taxis or small expenses, but the rate here is usually the least favorable. Exchange only the minimum necessary amount.

What to bring for exchange? It's best to bring US dollars (USD) — they are accepted everywhere and at the most favorable rate. Euros (EUR) are also exchanged, but the rate may be less attractive. Russian rubles are difficult to exchange, only at some banks in major cities and at an unfavorable rate.

Important advice: Never exchange money with strangers on the street, no matter how tempting the rate may seem. There is a high risk of fraud.
