The official currency in Kuala Lumpur and throughout Malaysia is the Malaysian ringgit (MYR). It is best to exchange cash in the city rather than at the airport, as the exchange rate there is extremely unfavorable. Here are a few trusted places with the best rates:
- Little India district (Jalan Masjid India). There is a whole row of exchange offices and jewelry shops here. The rate here is one of the best in the city center. We recommend comparing rates at several points, as they may vary slightly.
- Mid Valley Megamall. In our experience, this is the best currency exchange rate in all of Malaysia. The exchange offices are located on the Ground Level. It is worth coming here if you need to exchange a large amount. They even exchange rubles.
- ATMs. An excellent alternative to exchange offices. It is best to withdraw ringgit from CIMB Bank or Maybank ATMs β they do not charge a fee for withdrawals from foreign cards. Your bank's fee still applies, so try to withdraw large amounts at once.
Important! When exchanging cash at an exchange office, be sure to bring your passport, as you may be refused without it.
