What currency is used in Kuala Lumpur and what is best to bring?

The official currency of Malaysia and its capital Kuala Lumpur is the Malaysian ringgit (MYR). It is best to bring US dollars or euros in cash β they can be exchanged at the most favorable rate. We do not recommend exchanging currency at the airport, as the rate is very poor. The best exchange in the city is at Mid Valley Megamall shopping center or in the Little India area on Jalan Masjid India. An alternative option is to withdraw ringgit cash from CIMB Bank or Maybank ATMs. They do not charge a fee for withdrawals from foreign cards, which is often more profitable than exchanging cash. Mastercard and Visa cards are accepted almost everywhere, while Unionpay is practically useless for payments in stores and transport.
