Is it mandatory to buy a bus ticket from Kuala Lumpur to Malacca in advance, or can it be purchased at the ticket counters on site?

It is not at all necessary to buy a bus ticket in advance from Kuala Lumpur to Malacca if you do not have a strict time constraint. There are many buses on this routeβthey depart from TBS (Terminal Bersepadu Selatan) bus station approximately every 15β20 minutes. You can calmly arrive at the station and purchase a ticket for the nearest departure at the ticket counters or machines. At the counters, they usually only accept cash (ringgit). In the worst case, you might have to wait about half an hour for the next available bus, but this is rare. For example, we traveled on this route during the peak of Chinese New Year and had no problem buying tickets on site.
