It is not mandatory to buy a bus ticket from Malacca to Kuala Lumpur in advance, unless you need to arrive in Kuala Lumpur strictly on time, for example for a flight or train departure. There are many buses on this route, departing approximately every 15 minutes, so you can easily arrive at Melaka Sentral bus station and purchase a ticket for the nearest bus at the ticket counters or at automatic terminals. The ticket counters only accept cash. Occasionally, you might have to wait for the next available bus for half an hour to an hour, but this is quite rare. For example, we left Malacca by bus during the peak of Chinese New Year and had no problem buying tickets on site.
