In Vietnam, there is a whole hierarchy of buses, and the choice depends on distance, budget, and desired comfort. Here are the main types:

  • Sleeper Bus (Sleeper/Sleeping Bus): The country's signature. Instead of seats, there are three rows of lying or semi-lying beds in two tiers. Ideal for overnight trips (e.g., Ho Chi Minh City - Nha Trang). The price usually includes water, a wet wipe, and a blanket.
  • VIP Sleeper Bus (VIP Sleeper): An improved version. Only two rows of wider seats, each often closed with a curtain, creating a personal capsule. May have a toilet on board. The best choice for trips longer than 8 hours.
  • Seated Bus (Seat Bus): Regular buses with seats, sometimes minibuses. Used on short routes (e.g., Da Nang - Hoi An). The price is minimal, but comfort is basic. It's important to clarify about luggage compartment.
  • Limousine Van (Limousine Van): A comfortable minibus for 9-11 people with wide, often massage seats, sockets, and USB. More expensive, but ideal for medium-distance trips or airport transfers.
  • Local Buses (Local Bus): The most budget option for travel within the city or between neighboring villages. No air conditioning, may be overcrowded. Tourists rarely use them, but there are exceptions (e.g., bus No. 17 from Hanoi to the airport).

Our advice: For long distances (from 5 hours), take a sleeper, or better yet a VIP sleeper bus—this will save a night in a hotel. For short trips, a seated bus or "Limousine" is suitable. Always clarify the type of transport when buying a ticket.
