What currency is currently in use in Gagra and Abkhazia, and what is the best way to pay?

In Gagra and throughout Abkhazia, the Russian ruble is currently in use. This is the official currency you will use everywhere: in shops, cafes, markets, and for excursions. The national currency, the apsar, exists but is only used as a collectible coin; it is not in actual circulation.

The best option is to travel to Gagra with cash rubles. If you are from Russia, there is no problem — take rubles. If you are from another country, it is more advantageous to exchange dollars or euros for rubles in advance, for example, in Adler on the way to the border.
