In Gagra and throughout Abkhazia, the Russian ruble is currently in use. This is the official currency you will use everywhere: in shops, cafes, markets, and for excursions. The national currency, the apsar, exists but is only used as a collectible coin; it is not in actual circulation.

The best option is to travel to Gagra with cash rubles. If you are from Russia, there is no problem — take rubles. If you are from another country, it is more advantageous to exchange dollars or euros for rubles in advance, for example, in Adler on the way to the border. In Abkhazia itself, exchanging currency is difficult: there are few banks, they operate on inconvenient schedules (mostly until 5:00 PM and closed on weekends), and the exchange rate at private exchange offices is unfavorable.

Plastic cards are accepted in Gagra, but not everywhere. In large supermarkets and some cafes, you can pay with a Mir card or via Sberbank transfer and QR code. Even at markets, you can often pay by transfer, and sellers may share WiFi if you have no internet. However, you cannot rely entirely on cashless payments — for small purchases, taxis, and tips, it is better to have cash rubles.

You can withdraw cash from Russian cards at ATMs of local banks. In Gagra, ATMs are located at: Abazgaa St., 57/1 (Universal Bank), Abazgaa St., 55/4 (Sberbank of the Republic of Abkhazia), V. Ardzinba Ave., 165 (Sukhum Bank), Demerdzhipa St., 28-A (Gagra Bank), and others. The withdrawal fee depends on your bank. For example, with a T-Bank card, you can withdraw up to 100,000 rubles per month without a fee; other banks may charge a fee for using a foreign ATM.

Tipping in Abkhazia is not mandatory, but refusing change in taxis or cafes is received with gratitude. In restaurants and hotels, a service charge is often already included in the bill.
