Hibochiboc Volcano on Kamigin island

Article and Section Navigation

Description and is it worth a visit

Hibochiboc Volcano (pronounced Hypok-Hypok by locals) is an active stratovolcano about 1300 meters high. Last erupted in 1951, it is currently in a quiet state and is available to the public as a tourist attraction. Moreover, this is one of the main attractions on Kamigin, for which people come here even from other islands.

Hibok-Hibok consists of three craters, and several hot springs have formed on its slopes, which are also visited as separate attractions. But the most interesting thing on the volcano is the opportunity to climb to its top. From the highest point you can enjoy panoramic views of Camiguin, in good weather you can see the islands of Bohol, Cebu, Siquijor, Negros and Mindanao. On the way to the top, you should deviate from the route and go down into the crater, which is now filled with greenery, and at the bottom there is a small lake. At the top there is a monument to the memory of the victims of the volcano, of which there were not a few: only during the last eruption about 600 people died.

The Ascent is a simple hiking trip lasting 5 hours in one direction. Special equipment and training is not required, only at the end of the route the path goes up sharply, you have to wade through fallen trees and stones. You need trekking shoes, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, plenty of drinking water, and something to eat.

Experienced tourists can easily climb on their own, and if you have not previously passed such routes, it is better to hire a guide at the entrance to the Volcano National Park or at the resort. In addition, the guide along the way will be able to show you several interesting places (Hot Springs, waterfall, Lake), which you most likely will not find on your own.

🕐 Working hours

It is better to visit in dry weather during the dry season from January to May. The Ascent should ideally begin early in the morning with Dawn to avoid the midday heat.

💵Entrance fee / ticket price

The slopes and the top are a national park, entrance costs 200 pesos (3.26 USD, see currency and money of the Philippines).

🚶 How to get there

Hibok-Hibok is located in the northwestern part of Camiguin near the main tourist area of the island (Hibok-Hibok on the map). It offers easy guided hiking tours (from 1200 pesos), or you can climb yourself. There are at least two clearly visible paths leading up, you can go up one and down the other. Both of them seem to be bad asphalt roads that gradually turn into a dirt road and then into a trail, and theoretically you can get closer to the top even on a motorbike, but you have to leave it in the forest unattended. You can use the Yandex map editor OSM app for navigation. Organic Maps and others, they have marked trails and lookouts.
